Hi everyone. Hope you are safe and well at this time. Just a quick question. Does anyone take probiotics and methotrexate. Have had differing advice. Many thanks.

As with all complimentaries ask your rheumy nurse.

What is OK for one may not be for another!

The report in 'Which' consumer magazine suggested that many so called probiotics did not contain what they were supposed to. Although my partner likes them, I keep to yogurt where I know what I'm getting (and it's cheaper)

A lot are full of sugar,,,,plain yoghurt made in the airing cupboard is cheapest & best of all!

I take probiotics as I have too much Candida in my gut. I've been on mtx for years.

Being immunosuppressed can help the bad bacterial flourish and take over. I can't eat yogurt as I'm intolerant to dairy.

Who said there's an issue?

Someone told me that probiotics can cause gastroenteritis if you take methotrexate or other immunosuppressants.

Hi every time I've tried probiotics tablets (both before and during MTX) they've made my stomach feel worse and my eczema flare so have given up. I do have have a dairy free yoghurt with culture in which does help my stomach (but not my RA unfortunately 🤣).

Hi, I take a probiotic called Bio-Kult and am on MTX. I had been taking them for years before diagnosis last year and asked my rheumatologist if they were ok to continue with. He gave me a very definite YES so I never miss a day.

I very rarely have digestive issues, go to the loo regularly and apart from the RA stiffness and pain, feel pretty well mostly.

I remember him asking for the particular make at the time.

I have taken probiotics for years. Unfortunately the good ones are very expensive but cheap ones are a false investment. I like BioKult (tablet) and wouldn’t waste my money on something like Yakult, a live yoghurt or fermented food such as an unpasteurized saukraut would be a better alternative. I no longer take MTX but did for many years and I think good gut health is always important.

Have anyone tried cultured coconut? The Cultured Coconut is by far the most cost-effective probiotic available on the market. Compared to yogurt, The Cultured Coconut is over 170% more potent as a probiotic, per serving (based on 1.75 billion CFUs in 3/4 cup of Danone Active Probiotic Yogurt versus up to 300 billion CFUs in 2 TBSP of The Cultured Coconut). And astoundingly, 3 times more effective than probiotic supplements (based on 100 billion CFUs in 1 probiotic capsule of Ultimate Flora, Ultra Potent).

I take it occasionally but it’s not cheap.
