I am one not recommending probiotics. Late research has shown that some probiotics infact cause more harm than good.

OMG! 😱 thanks for that Simba, mabey need to do a bit more reasearch into it. 🤗 X

Thank you Simba for posting the link. I have just had a quick read through and my probiotics are going in the bin. A while back I went off probiotic yoghurt and I couldn't bring myself to eat it. Beleiving probiotics are a good thing, because of advertising and what I had read, I bought them in tablet form. Lesson for me, listen to what your body is telling you.

Lots of new research on the stuff. Lactobacillus bifidus that is so often supplemented may cause more bad than good.

I take full spectrum probiotic tablets. No clue if they’re helping or not though! Rheumy doc said they’re fine.

Hi Angelmar

I've taken probiotics for Yrs.. And for me they definitely do work..

I've been on methotrexate since early 90s.. But I used to have terrible cramps and they diagnosed IBS and put me on some awful drugs for it.

I looked into what could help me more naturally and found probiotics, and wow.. The cramps stopped.

I definitely know they work, as once after an op, I stopped taking them, I think I just forgot to get some more.. And after a while (short while!) I had terrible cramps again.. Then I got some more probiotics and hey presto (😁) the cramps stopped again!

I used to take Holland and Barretts but now I take pro bio 7. I honestly wouldn't be without them

I did see a program.. trust me I'm a doctor? when they tested what worked best. I think kefir came out best. Other natural ways of increasing good gut bacteria is blue cheese (yum!) Greek yoghurt and sauerkraut.. Check to see if its live though.

There's loads of info now about how having good gut health is so important, and I think me helping mine has helped me cope with the MTX and all the other drugs I've had to take over the last 3 decades..

Take care

Jojo xx

Hi jojo, thanks for that! Hope your well, I’ve just been reading about this kefir yogurt and it seems to be a natural probiotic, as I love fruit and yogurt I think I could incorporate this into my daily diet without any problem so just might give this a go.

Take Care 🤗 X

i make porage with boiled water, then micro for 1 min. when cool add about 50ml kefir plus raspberries n blueberries, alternate days. think kefir more dgestible than milk as it's lactose free ?

I have a stoma due to bowel cancer aged 35. Although I’ve had no problems with it for best part of 20 years I was prescribed antibiotics to prop up my immune system whilst starting new treatment for RA I was on antibiotics for 6 weeks very low dose and it messed my gut up something terrible. Treatment had to stop but I started taking a probiotic tablet once a day and alternate it with yakult. I can only speak for myself but my gut is back to normal I can eat almost anything without having to run to the loo and I can honestly say they’re brilliant for me. So much so that new treatment can start again from today which as I’m having such a bad time atm is a godsend. I think you need to make the decision for yourself if you think it might help you go for it, if after a week or so you don’t feel any better then I doubt it will do you any harm.

in reply to Leics

Thanks for that Leics, this is my problem, I’ve been on Cimzea for 4 months, and 5 days after the first dose I developed a sinus infection, I’m now on my 3 dose of antibiotics as it still hasn’t gone and they are now affecting my gut, which ones do you buy? 🤗 X

I find that natural probiotics are the best. Kefir, a fermented yoghurt drink, is very good. in fact any fermented foods are good for your gut, saeurkraut, kimchee, pickled vegetables generally.

in reply to mickam

Hi Mickam, just explored the kefir and I’m sure I can incorporate this into my daily diet without any problem,😃not sure about the sauerkraut or pickled veg 🙈🙈 thanks for the great advise! 🤗X

There is however a problem with these products. They have high histamine and elevated histamine in RA makes inflammation worse.☹️

I can only speak from experience. I have found no problems with Kefir.

It always depends. I did find problems and understand today why I did. But this is me I probably have high histamine, which is very common in RA.

That's the strange thing, RA seems to affect us in so many ways. What seems to affect some people badly barely registers with others. Everyone's experience appears to be different. I suppose this is what makes it so difficult to deal with.

Simba1992 profile image
Simba1992 in reply to mickam

True enough but then again there are certain scientificly researched facts about the underlying metabolic situation in RA and one seems to be that the the mast cells that are part of our adaptive immunresponse are activatad and are responsible for histamine elevation which is part of the illness process in RA. It has been shown that controlling this activation calms the process and this can be done quite effectively by supplementing with gelatlne.

It may not always be so clear how high histamine foods affect us, especially if we do not eat them in abundance and counteract the effect with high collagen foods.

It took quite a while for me to really see the histamine connextion in my skin and gut issues.

and bitter foods [not sour like gherkins etc] but artichokes, sprouts are good for inflammation

I brought one from amazon called probiotic max by Lindens 100 capsules lactobacillus acidophilus really cheap because I didn’t want to spend a fortune if they didn’t work. The natural probiotics such as fermented foods are as others have said perhaps better but if you’re having problems with your gut the last thing you need is fermented with vinegar if you’re already suffering lol. Like I said I do switch it up though pill one day yakult or probiotic yogurt the next day. I was on long term antibiotics which did the damage too but I haven’t had any issues since no thrush which you can get with antibiotics too. Give it a try if only whilst you’re still on antibiotics.

I can understand your misgivings about products fermented in vinegar but that is not true of all natural probiotics. Kefir and Kimchee for instance have never so much as seen a drop of vinegar.

Thanks to you all for great advice and insight into probiotics! Top Class!!! 🤗X
