I've just dug out my mums recipe book, one is marmite pie and was requested a lot 4 years ago when we run a village celebration. So here goes make pastry to fill pie tin then finally chop 1 0nion, enough spuds and carrots and swedes to fill and mix in a tablespoon of marmite and enough cheese to taste. Pop in a whisked egg and top with pastry. Its lovely and if you have pastry left over alternate grated cheese with smear of marmite and hey presto it a twiglet.
I think as time goes on we'll need to get creative and recipes like this are cheap and filling. We're rationing ourselves to a few sweets every day but a packet of suet (they do veggie) will be great standby. My son has said get ready for a long haul and his friend a Pharmacist in London hospital has said the same. So NRAS could we have a off topic place for hints and tips to a avoid enforced boredom and stretch out the store cupboard and freezer.
For my bit I'm not doing a wash every day because I can but when the basket is full.
I use a product called Star Drops a lot for wall and floor cleaning (actually Katy does) its universal leaves no residue and is great on windows. Anyone else have a product that may be useful and not widely known about so might be bypassed by the shelf strippers?

I've got some it and sometimes make Cider Toffee and you just chuck it is hot golden syrup and stand back. But no Breaking Bad effect cover in chocolate and its a crunchy. x
Definitely agree with the vinegar. White vinegar brings stainless steel up nice and shiny with very little effort (I suppose malt does too but only use that for removing water stains on glassware etc). Vinegar also good disinfectant. I do use bicarb for cleaning the fridge and freezer too.
I'm so glad to hear you have your mum's recipe book, I have both my mum's and Nana's and treasure them. I've always been one for not liking waste and like to be resourceful and creative with food and I think that people who are stock piling food in particular fresh food, that it wont last so what are you going to do with it? I think sadly to say a lot of people wont be bothered and the bin will be well fed, but for others it will be an opportunity to start being resourceful and economical with their supplies. Stardrops is so versatile as carbolic soap used to be all those years ago. Enjoy your mum's recipe book and enjoy any memories it brings you.
My granddaughter is only 3 months old and is nearly completely recycled. My son and DIL are into all that they have my mums furniture, etc and are very well off just think nothing should go into landfill. No doubt that is correct but I'm naughty and bought cute clothes.
I do my best to recycle but a little indulgence and keeping things in balance doesn't go amiss. I'm sure I would if I had children or grandchildren have bought some cute clothes too and why not. Recycling and looking after the environment is so important but we all globally need to be united on this and do our bit otherwise it's a bit like attending a volcano with a brush and dustpan!
I told them that there's a family in China or Vietnam will starve if we don't buy that , and we also ask to speak to the baby. She always agrees with Nan. lol
I heard that Jamie Oliver is going to show us on TV how to make meals with what we can source and particularly from what tinned and dried goods we have in our store cupboards.
None at all but you've a family. ! I think we are ok as living here winter can cause problems so have a shelf in garage then it was the 'Brexit shelf' bought over months just an odd jar or packet or tin. It all be used my friend hasn't got anything standby so its not being stockpiled but shared. I wonder about medications. Its alright that government say dispense 4 not 3 months but we can only get 1 month at a time. But of course its such early days so things might change anyway.
We grow our own a lot but and farm has spuds. Have you tried a local farm shop? I'm a hunter gatherer by nature, so blackberry's in freezer, mushrooms too and lots of runner beans. I pickle and make jam so got them on the shelf. Free food is always welcome on a cold winter day. Not done wine yet but do have rhubarb ready might pass a few hours next week. I've even made corned beef in the past for fayres. Trouble was Brexit was delayed and not much seasonal around and I refuse to buy out of season strawberries for example as don't taste right. I use tins like baked beans and tuna and packets as well like biscuits and crackers and lentils, rice and spaghetti. Not load loads but enough for us for a fortnight without shopping. After that I'm hoping things will calm down. Got seeds luckily for salad and vegetables but they'll take a while to grow.
I horrified my GP..told him if I couldn’t have at least two months supply, during this incarceration ....l’d take my BP meds every other day... got the scrip...but written on two different prescriptions!
Sounds yummy...off to see if any of the frozen pastry I bought to make mince pies this year is still in the freezer .... I’m afraid making pastry from scratch these days is not on my horizon,
I haven’t bought any washing powder or liquid for over a year now. I use Eco Eggs. You just throw them in the washing machine with your washing ....they are filled with little pellets that you restock every now and then ...one is for coloureds one for whites. I find they both do the job just as well as expensive washing products.
I also use Dye catchers...all makes I have tried work equally well. You can wash dark jeans with whites & not a tinge of colour seeps through.
The same company do an amazing stain remover.....so far I have removed Red Wine from a cream sofa (not me responsible) and Marmite from cream silk curtains (don’t ask)Oh alright then...Marmite toast in bed....sticky fingers opened curtains.....Aaaaagh!
