Rant 3

I've just been watching the BBC London news. There was a piece on there about the fact that Londoners, in particular, seem to be completely ignoring advice on self isolation and social avoidance. It seems to be younger people in the main. There were a couple of people interviewed. One, a woman in a pub said "I make my own decisions, I do what I want".The other, a young ma,n when asked about contact with others suggested that it was down to others to stay out of his way. Clearly both these people are selfish and extremely ignorant. If the attitudes of these people are generally indicative of the opinions of Londons younger people I would suggest that it is time for more stringent measures. If people will not willingly do the sensible thing I believe that non-essential businesses such as pubs, bars, clubs, cafes, betting shops, etc, should be shut down in the short term. Clearly this is not a desirable step and will cause some hardship for owners and staff within these businesses but, ultimately, I think it has come down to a decision between short term curtailment of personal liberties or possibly extending the life of the virus resulting in more deaths, unnecessary deaths.

Get the police involved. In the situation we are in, there is no time for ignorance.

medway-lady profile image

Not enough police in London these days the Army needs to be bought in to support police in every day tasks. I feel going to get worse before better unless the city is closed down. Police need to deal with crime which and this is a personal view will increase. This is not the time to look at civil liberties but act for greater god.

They won't though Ajay. Stringent measures are needed in place otherwise people will suffer. Not everyone can cope with crowds.

I think one of the issues is that if the government closes businesses then they have to pay them compensation.....so prefer to let them go bust slowly and painfully.

in reply tohelixhelix

It's appalling. These poor people are going to lose their livelihoods with no back up. The economic cost will be devastating.

in reply tohelixhelix

Yes but big businesses will be saved. In fact, not enforcing closures, means the insurers can rest easy. Which shouldn't be difficult, as that's what they do anyway.

It is in the government’s power to close these places. I suspect they don’t because they might have to pay compensation to people whose livelihoods are lost to protect the rest of us

So long as the government say they can stay open then they are saying people can use them

And so they will

Yes.

I'm appalled to say that 2 of my relatives made a totally unnecessary journey from Scotland to London by car today, stopping at motorway facilities en route, to do a routine visit to other relatives.

What is up with people ?

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toMmrr

To be honest I wouldn’t want them visiting me. My son lives in love noon and he isn’t planning on visiting- he rings most nights but he won’t visit- we are both in our 70s so I wouldn’t care how far my relatives travelled to see me, I’d much rather they didn’t.

My third son and his wife were planning to drive three hours to bring my two granddaughters to visit but we all agreed it has to wait. Disappointing but that’s life for now.

I do assure you that it is not the attitude of all Londoners!

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toJora

Of course not Jora, it's not so different in my part of Wales and no doubt throughout much of the UK. The problem is unfortunately that there's far too many of these selfish people about!

I know you have PF as I do. Just having it is a big enough worry for us without having this virus on top!! Hope you stay safe throughout this crisis...................

Take care

Jora profile image
Jora in reply towishbone

I can't remember, is your PF a direct complication of RA? Mine is, but thankfully, it's very rare these days as most people are sufficiently well controlled. It appears to have been Tocilizumab that did it for me. I only recently discovered how ill I was; respiratory failure, sepsis, etc etc . It's quite a miracle that I survived. There's no way a bloody bat is going to get me after all that!

Stay safe,

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toJora

Blimey Jora, and I thought that I had a rough time, which I did, but at least I managed to avoid sepsis - just! According to my respiratory consultant my PF is also directly related to my RA. It fits too, as not long before being diagnosed I had septic arthritis in my hip, which needed surgery and an anxious 10 day stay in hospital on antibiotics and undergoing various tests to see if the infection had spread. The orthopaedic consultant at the time reckoned Enbrel was the main reason for the infection because it helped a bug from a recent UTI to access my bloodstream. I was so afraid of getting another serious infection that I decided to stop taking all immune suppressants. BIG mistake!!!...after about 5 or 6 weeks I experienced the most horrendous debilitating flare you can imagine, which I somehow managed to put up with for a few weeks before phoning rheumy for help. During that period I developed a persistent cough which eventualy eased after a few weeks. It was then that the inflammation must have got into my lungs. :-(

The moral of this story....don't stop your meds without discussing it with your rheumy first, like this idiot did! Let's hope we both have more luck dodging this virus!

Look at Paris at the weekend, exactly the same thing, wandering about without a care then government stepped in to enforce with stringent measures. The same will happen here but needs the government to have backbone to do it sooner than later to save lives. People are so stupid, watched the evening news tonight and saw the young guy you mentioned who had no intention of changing his plans, but equally as stupid were the older couple who went out to see how busy it was. You’ve got to wonder about folk.

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toFroggie70

They should have done it way before now instead of playing this 'getting the timing right' game they seem obsessed with!

I totally agree but these kind of people will continue no matter what. To them it’s 2fingers to authority and would find it a challenge it’s everybody’s fault but there own.

Personally if they are not scared help nurse the dying or clean the hospitals

I have seen pictures of London today it looked deserted so not everyone is ignorant. A lot of people are listening to government's advice.

Also businesses should be closed officially then they could get compensation and support as now they are just left to struggle...

LunaParry profile image
LunaParry in reply toMorigan

I live in London and it's almost deserted. A lot of pubs and cafes have closed. There are still a few cafes open, but you might see two or three people inside, seating whit a big distance of each other. I feel sad for local businesses.

We are home working and go for a daily walk to our local park (to keep our sanity) and people are indeed making efforts to keep social distance.

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply toMorigan

I should imagine quite a few of the people in central London in restaurants & bars are tourists.

Morigan profile image
Morigan in reply toAgedCrone

I work at the bar, haven't been to work for few days but my last day at work was very quiet all the customers in were regulars, local people mostly who just said I did go to the pub for last 20 years every day I will just carry on doing the same until you guys close :)

Not in central London but Brighton is London by the sea so pretty close.

Morigan profile image

But yeah I imagine so... Some people are stuck here and can't get back to their countries so don't have much choice...

I was listening to the Coronavirus Rhapsody a few minutes ago... dark in places, and it’s the selfish one dying after causing the deaths of others.

It is quite funny in places too.

I read something on Facebook, where people were saying, what's the big deal it's only flu they should let us do our own thing and the others stay isolated. I read it and thought (excuse my French) but what the F... people are dying, you are so selfish, have some compassion. Instead of starting an argument I just came off the post. Sadly some people think it's ok to say and be like that. Grrrr stay safe everyone. Xx

My husband's best friend is saying the same thing. I've just stopped talking to him so I don't punch him. With my ra it would hurt me a lot more than him. 😕

Noone is coming into my house, and I am going nowhere. If other people choose to be lunatics, then they take the consequences.

The lunacy extends to this government, ignoring the evidence from South Korea that testing and isolation work. Italy is a horrific reminder, that too little too late leads to catastrophe. So sorry for those people. Just glad I live in Scotland, once again leading the way.

Flowersaregreat profile image

I'm a Londoner in my 30s. I was trying social distancing but then someone I know was in the park the day after his wife said he had a cough and was meant to be isolated but then as he "felt better" he decided he would go out. I estimate he's late 40s or perhaps early 50s so old enough to know better. Local pub is deserted. As I live inner city it's such high population density I can't even go for a short walk without passing people and pavements too narrow for width berth so gonna be more like self isolation now rather than social distancing for me now as so stressed about it

wishbone profile image

It's not only young people are the problem, but senior citizens as well.

I listened to a recent sombre speech by the leader of the Welsh Assembly trying to reassure the Welsh public about the increased cases and spread of coronavirus. He was in serious danger of sounding like a broken record by repeatedly saying how the virus only has a mild effect on the young and healthy, or words to that effect, with nowhere near the same emphasis about the risks to the old and vunerable... I nearly threw my slipper at the telly! If young people don't know the situation by now they never will!

BoJo was on the news earlier saying they hope to send this virus 'packing' as he put it, in about 12 weeks time if, and it's a very big IF in my books, the public heed the advice we have given them. What next! :-O My daughter told me that our local pub advertised this on facebook today... ."In the absence of any government instruction, we remain open as usual." They went on to say.... "The establishment is cleaned regularly. All surfaces are disinfected and will be on a regular basis." :-O

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply towishbone

I had an overnight break at a spa booked for early May. I recieved an email yesterday saying much the same thing, "we clean regularly and are using disposable napkins, cups etc". I called to rebook, which they did for me, no problem.

But, the receptionist on the phone said the same thing, government advice is that they can stay open for the time being.

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toMmrr

All I can say is I hope the pub are cleaning all surfaces with 60% alcohol spray and not just ordinary disinfectant. Being the old sceptic I am, I have my doubts.

Tile profile image
Tile in reply towishbone

60% alcohol even higher doesn't work as well as bleach. Actually items need to soak COVERED in alcohol for 10 minutes at least. Gels work differently.

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toTile

So that's yet more misinformation from the experts and government about using alcohol? Don't know if it makes a difference but I use 99% alcohol? Though obviously even that strength doesn't work as well as bleach. The trouble with bleach is you need to be careful how and what you use it on, at least that's my understanding of it?

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply toMmrr

Are you really happy to go to a spa? I don’t think I would trust them to have sterilised all their equipment, & I certainly wouldn’t have a massage with someone leaning & breathing over me...maybe once staff are tested but certainly not yet.

No I'm not at the spa, haven't been for a bit.

I'll go back again when this is all over.

I saw those interviews, I couldn't believe them especially that guy telling people they should keep out of his way. Who the hell does he think he is.xxx

I agree that the people interviewed have a shocking disregard for the well-being of others, but It isn't right to make sweeping condemnations of "London's younger people" because of those two. Reporters do like to find people to express controversial opinions to give them a better story and provoke a stronger reaction.

It doesn't help that the government is giving out contradictory messages. On the one hand, people are being advised not to go to pubs, restaurants etc and on the other, the pubs and other places have not been told to close. To most people this makes no sense and confuses them. They wonder how it can be wrong to go if the places are allowed to stay open. My personal opinion is that the government is looking after the interests of the insurers, who would have to pay out if the government ordered shutting, but do not have to pay if the businesses themselves decide, albeit under massive financial pressure, that they can't stay open.

I've no objection to the ban on going out unnecessarily being enforced by whatever means it takes, but let us all beware of condemning any categories of people because of the known bad behaviour of some members. Please contemplate that the word "they" can be very hateful, and is even worse when followed by "all". Particularly at this time, the emphasis should be on "we".

My daughter lives in USA in Dallas and all pubs clubs and restaurants are closed over there. She is doing video calls with her friends as they can't meet up anywhere. Should do same here then we'd all know where we stand with regards to going out. X

A week ago many bars in NYC were packed mostly students and tourists. Now finally ALL BARS ARE CLOSED! There are 30somethings in ICU in NY Hospitals without underlying health conditions.

Sad that there are people like that but to be honest I'm not surprised these days. On a positive note 3 of our younger neighbours have offered help to the two of us who are having to avoid social contact. I burst into tears this morning when my next door neighbour gave me some eggs. She'd made the effort to pick some up for me in the supermarket. A small thing which means so much.

Keep safe everyoneXxx

I am trying to self isolate but had to have blood test today. Have given up on seeing any of grandchildren for the next few months including the youngest who is only 6 months old and changing so quickly. One of my friends has decided to travel to Wales this weekend to visit her son and his children and he thinks it is a good idea. She is 73 and her husband 78. I've tried to get her to think again but to no avail. I give up.

This seems to be the consensus of all millennials world-wide. I’m in the US. A young neighbor of mine brought me corned beef and cabbage and tried to barge right in. I said I can’t invite you in. She said why not, do I have cooties. I said no it’s social distancing. She looked at
