It's only happened a few times but I occasionally get a dry throat and croaky voice - just for a few hours or so.

When I'm feeling not so good, my voice is weak and creaky. When feeling a bit better my voice comes back. Another joy of RD.

Is it down to RD? My voice has changed as well, had not connected it to RD

I looked up voice changes and RD and found an article last year saying the majority of people with RD show changes to their larynx on post mortem examination. Another issue that is now only becoming recognised. My voice has changed, but who knows the cause ?

Yes, very dry throat. One time I used to put a grain of salt on my tounge or few grains of sugar. You can also chew sugar free gum. I find cutting down sugar and white flour helps. Plenty of fruit and veg to keep hydrated.

I have a persistent dry cough and at times almost completely loose my voice. As last resort my GPs referred me to ENT, during the course of tests and visits it was discovered that on the first occasion one vocal cord was not vibrating correctly and on the second that the sides had switched and now the other vocal cord was not vibrating correctly. Their diagnosis was that the joints at either end of the vocal cords were being affected by the RA (cricoarytenoid joint), although the rheumatology registrar I saw at my annual review said they didn't know what they were talking about. But I was happy with the ENT diagnosis, they were very thorough, and I no longer worry that it might be something more serious.

But if worried talk to your GP and see what they suggest.

Happens to me also nearl always have a dry sore throat, think I'm going down with cold but never the case, eyes dry to

I have been like that for years. I love singing but I am so croaky now that it doesn't sound right anymore. I have Sjorgrens as well which is another thing connected with RD and it causes my eyes to be very dry as well.

I once saw a locum doctor who heard my croaky voice and seemed very concerned even though I told him I had been like it for a long time. He sent me off for an immediate chest X-ray and then a week later I was given an appointment to see an ENT doctor. When I went in, I was horrified when he said I had been sent because the doctor thought I might have cancer of the throat. However, he did all the tests and thank goodness it wasn't and all he suggested was getting a facial spa and inhaling with that every day as it could loosen my through muscles and vocal chords up. I do use it sometimes when the croaking gets very bad and it helps although not very much.

People are always asking me if I have got a cold.

such a shame about your singing! I sing too and even though this croak has only happened a few times, I have worried that it will stop me singing. I find that singing in the showre is so wonderful because of the steam, so the facial spa sounds like a good idea!

Me to but it’s intermittent, but my throat seems to be dry a lot of the time despite good hydration. I think I read somewhere that cimzia can cause a dry throat also RD can affect the cricoarytenoid around the vocal cords.

The thing about the croaky voice is interesting. I am not sure what the significance of this is, but my rheumatologist I see every 3 months takes note if my voice is croaky. When it is, she asks me about it, when it isn’t she asks when it went away.

Actually,I never notice when it is croaky, and don’t know why this is significant to her.

I get a croaky voice when my mouth, nose and eyes are dry. Can be linked to RD or sjorgens syndrome ( I’m still waiting to be tested for)
