Hi can someone advise me on the colour sharps lid that I need for biologics , I need to order one to start meds and I’m sure they said I needed a different box for biologics than methotrexate. But when I rang the sharps people she said all her box’s are the same .

Hi,

My sharps box is yellow supplied by the healthcare company, they also take away my full one and supply another. Best thing is to talk to your supplier.

Good luck and keep pain free.

I have only had a yellow sharps bin for biologics. Didn’t know you got any another colour 😮

Maybe I’m wrong , I’m sure she told me biologics are destroyed differently than methotrexate, maybe I was dreaming I will give them a ring .

What colour lid ??

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels

I'd double check but I'm pretty sure it's the purple lidded sharps box you'll need.

Buckybri profile image
Buckybri in reply tonomoreheels

I must be wrong maybe what they meant was I need two box’s because mtx has to be disposed of differently to biological meds

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply toBuckybri

Ah. Then it won't be the same one then if they're disposed of differently. But I would have thought residuals of biologics were as hazardous? southernhealth.nhs.uk/_reso...

Having had experience with cancer and methotrexate is a drug used in chemotherapy the purple lid ones are for chemotherapy drugs. So would make sense to me that it would be a purple one for methotrexate. You would think they would make it easier for you as they know what bins for what drugs. Wishing you the best.

Hatshepsut what size is your Mtx box, I got one delivered last week my god you’ve got to fight to put the MTX injection in the box and you luck 5 can fit in, that was the chemist that told me purple lid.

Doctor came yesterday to take blood so I was showing her, so she is going do a prescription for another one .

What a carry on,

You thing the medical people would know.

I get my MTX bin from my rheumatology clinic. It's about 5 x 5Ins, and about 1ft 3 mins high, with a flip lid. I have had smaller ones, but this one is best. Unfortunately, the ones delivered by healthcare at home for my biologic are tiny, so I usually ask for 2 to be delivered. Luckily I have a big cupboard just by the bathroom so I keep them in there!

Hope you get it all sorted.

Yea I said to the sharps people on the phone that they need to b a different colour to the mtx box and she said she didn’t know . But I’m waiting for a call from the rhumy doc just to check . Thanks .

I have the same for both, and was told that they incinerate them all as if they were cytotoxic in our area so no point distinguishing. But if your area does treat differently then purple for MTX and yellow for biologics. But biologics can go in purple lidded bin.

Purple => for the disposal of Sharps including those contaminated with cytotoxic and/or cytostatic medicinal products and their residues (anything that changes the cell structure)

Yellow => for the disposal of Sharps contaminated with medicinal products and their residues (other than cytotoxic and/or cytostatic medicines)

To my knowledge after working in the NHS for 15 yes, all sharps boxes are yellow but sometimes the kids are a different colour. I am not sure about biologicals but drugs that contain a level of chemotherapy, such as Methotrexate need to go in a purple lidded sharps bin. They get dealt with differently because of the chemo ingredients.

I hope that helps to clarify some things.

In a hospital setting you might see red sharps boxes. These aren't for needles or syringes. They are for metal single use only items such as sissors and forceps that they try to melt down and recycle and save money and the environment. (That's how I understand it anyway).

I have had both yellow and purple lids for my methotrexate. My rheumy nurse did say biologics were disposed of differently so will need a specific sharps box but she didn’t go into details

Hi different trusts have different policies. Your local pharmacy will inform you of colour. Where do you leave your full sharps box. If health centre... They may give you the appropriate colour. In my trust it's a purple lid. But really you should not have to worry about this. The script issuer should be aware of special colour of sharps box and order it for you.

All sorted now thanks . I knew I wasn’t hearing things . Lol.

Phew 😅 so stressful something so small upsets the apple cart. Why so many differences???? Mind boggles. Glad it’s sorted

Methotrexate is a purple topped bin and humira is a yellow topped bin.

I was asked to use a yellow sharps bin with purple lid for hazardous waste. I get replacement bins at hospital and return full, sealed and dated bins to my GP. I use Etanercept and Methotrexate and dispose of both in the same bin.
