Hello I have a very sore mouth and wondered if it might be anything to do with my medication. I'm on Sulfasalazine and Methotrexate.

Taking immune suppressant medication obviously makes you more likely to get infections and thrush in your mouth is a possibility. A swab for culture or the characteristic white patches would help in that case. You would need to consult your medical team.

But methotrexate can give you a sore mouth as a side effect also.

Thank you for your reply its really helpful.

When I had a reaction to sulfasalazine I got a sore tongue then numbness and swelling. How long have you been on it?

Keep an eye on it. Unfortunately there is a bug doing it’s rounds effecting the mouth. Hope it doesn’t spoil Christmas 🎄

I started end of October. Not heard of a bug effecting the mouth but that's interesting. I'll see how it goes. Thanks for you help.

Are you taking Folic Acid ?

A sore mouth can be a side effect of SSZ, for MTX it's specifically oral disorders that are listed which I guess a sore mouth could be considered an oral disorder. I'd mention it next time you see your team but til then you could try a salt water rinse with warm water or something I’ve tried with success is Tyrozets. Though usually for sore throats they can also be soothing for a sore mouth as they're an anaesthetic as well as a mild antibiotic. Do let the Pharmacist know what you're prescribed though just in case anything reacts with your meds, or ask what they would recommend. Obviously avoid spicy or acidic foods as they'll irritate it further. I hope it doesn’t spoil your Christmas.

Since taking methotrexate, I sometimes get a very sore mouth / ulcerated tongue. My dentist told me not to use toothpaste when this happens as it contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which can make a sore mouth much worse. My record to date is 12 ulcers in one go.

When I was on sulfasalazine, I had a sore mouth and very chapped lips. The dr prescribed 2mg of folic acid a day and the problem went away. I hope it helps you. I know how miserable it is.

Hi sorry to hear about your problems with your medication but I am no longer on ether of those medications your taking as I had to come off them due to a Lung condition but when I was taking them I had none of the side effects you seem to be suffering from, so I hope you find an answer to your problem.
