Sore throat and mouth with methotrexate: I've always... - NRAS
Sore throat and mouth with methotrexate
Depends why your mouth is sore...if it's mouth ulcers then I would push the rheumy to explain why he/she doesn't think it's the drug causing it. But if not because of ulcers then many other reasons for sore mouth, including gum problems. Have you had a dental check up recently?
Hi there
I suffered terribly.Saw my GP and dentist several times. No obvious cause. I developed an allergy to methotrexate, and never had those problems again once I'd stopped. Nor since 4 years ago after I had that reaction to the methotrexate. My consultant agreed it was that awful drug. Hope you get some relief soon.

Thanks for your reply,I don't have ulcers and got to the dentist very 6 month and a former dental nurse so I know my mouth is healthy. I think your solution could be a likely factor. Also my tounge fells swollen, think I need to look into this thank you x
I take it this has only happened since you started taking MTX? You don't say whether you take MTX tablets or inject but if it's oral this may help you - c&p'd from the NHS National Patient Safety Agency leaflet for oral MTX pre-treatment info leaflet:
"Mouth ulcers, sore throat or sore mouth
If you experience mouth ulcers, or a sore throat or mouth,
speak to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. It may be
necessary for you to have a blood test to check how your
body is coping. In many cases, if your blood tests are normal,
you may be given some medication to treat these problems."
If you use injectable MTX the patient info leaflet states
"Very common - mouth inflammation
Common- mouth ulcers
Uncommon - throat inflammation
Reporting of side effects. If you get any side effects talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse."
If your Rheumy's examined your mouth to come to this conclusion what does he think it is related to because if it was me I'd want to be sure it wasn't MTX then I could rule it out in an attempt to find out what is causing it. If he hasn't examined you I would make an appointment with your GP to see to what he makes of it & your Rheumy depts response.
Hope this helps & you get the help you need.
I had a sore tongue when I was on MTX and was prescribed folic acid daily ( apart from mtx day ) and was told this is a common problem x
Im the same doc tells me it is because of the methotrexate. It was suggested that thr folic acid was to be increased. But ive added in my own vit a e c and serlariam to help with my amune system.

Thankyou for the replays,I now take the injection.think I need to go back to rheumatology.i don't really want to start my bilogics with these symptoms x
Hi I had the same and was told it was a side effect. I had sickness and got my folic increased and it solved it xx worth asking for an increase x
Would be good if that that worked.its so uncomfortable all the time x
Also folic helps with other things. They offered. Me anti sickness tabs but I asked to try folic increase and was fine. Only downside is people wondering why at 45 I need folic .. makes me giggle
Hiya jo. Do you not get your folic acid on prescription with your MTX?
Yes but if I say I have folic they give u a strange look xc
I was started on MTX 7.5mg and upping dosage each week to max 20mg and started getting a bad throat, nausea and dry mouth after 3 weeks on it. By the 5th week of taking MTX my throat was so bad it felt it was closing up. I was told by rheumy advise line to stop MTX immediately. That was 3 weeks ago I still have a bad throat and feel like I have swallowed a bag of marbles. Gp has given me a course of penecillin to rule out infection and if it doesnt clear I need to see ENT. Not sure if it was the MTX but it only started after I started taking it. I am not taking anything else for RD, fibro etc at the mo. Maybe go to your GP to get their opinion. Sorry not sure if I helped much. Gentle hugs Joolz. x
I personally think it's the methotrexate.i went to my gp and she just said it looked red ands put it down to laryngitis.bilogics come friday but would like to sort this out first x
