How quickly should 30mg dose of Presnisolone kick in?
I’ve been in a bad flare up for a couple of weeks now and started on stronger pain meds (meptid/codeine) but was still in lots of pain so the Dr put me on a 30mg prednisolone taper dose 4 days ago. I’m feeling no relief and am so uncomfortable should i go back to the drs?
Hi Laura, I was given 2x20mg prednisone daily in 2015, after going to ER, and it made a difference overnight, and was like magic in a couple of days.
In the UK, currently given taper of 3x5mg for two weeks, reducing every two weeks, and it took two weeks to kick in well.
Good luck on it, but hopefully you will have better disease control soon so that corticosteroid is no longer needed. Its side effects are very undesirable.
PS stronger options for pain control might be a way forward? Prednisolone only deals with reducing inflammation (therefore reducing pain) but I was given both prednisolone and Tramadol after arrival home to the UK in late 2015.
Thank you for your reply. I never seem to take well to low doses! The dr said about morphine next as nothing else is cutting it at the moment il try a bit longer & hopefully it’l kick in soon
Day 5 it kicked in for me it was like a magic wand over the body so keep going for a few more days if you can. See or call Doc by Fri if no relief.

We all have a love and hate relationship on here with Pred as it does make many of us feel fab for short term and some long term and then some hate it for its side effects etc but sometimes you just need relief from the pain and if this does it whilst you wait for your other drugs to kick in then its worth a go!

I’m hating the excessive sweating a few hours after taking it!! But il happily put up with that if it gives me some relief. Hopefully it’l kick in soon.

Have you been checked for VIT D levels as well as that was a huge part of me sweating and feeling crap.

Yes they’ve checked my levels & I take vit d supplements every day x
Sorry to hear you haven’t got that instant relief that Prednisone can give. In the past I feel like a Duracell battery bunny after first dose but last time ( on 20mg) it took a good 10 days before I could feel any benefit but I think that was mainly due to the inflammation/ flare had really taken hold for some time before I went to my Rheumatologist for help and the prescription. As others have said hold on there a little longer as it should take effect. In the meantime, try to pace yourself and do things that make you happy. Wishing you well.
Thanks for your reply. yes in the past I’ve been full of it after taking it but this time is different! It’s good to hear that sometimes it can kick in later. I’m having a particularly bad flare up so perhaps its taking longer to work its magic!
Hi. What a shame. you’ve got through the first four days. I have taken prednisolone a few times over the years and I found it takes 6 to 7 days to start to kick in and about 10 days to get me there properly. Hang in there is my advice but do you know your own body .
Hi, prednisolone usually works quickly. As nomoreheals says I would contact my GP soon.
I have just been back to the drs and she was going to give me steroid injections but when she checked me over, it turns out I’ve got an upper respiratory infection so she couldn’t do it today feeling rather fed up!
