Sciatica 😩

Hi, I have sciatica at the moment and is so dreadfully painful. I’ve been given amytriptiline to take at night which is fine but I’m so sore during the day. I’m on naproxen and I’ve taken paracetamol on top so hopefully it will kick in. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sarah

Speak to a physio about stretching exercises...I find doing some gentle stretches definitely releases sciatic pain& it passes off quicker.

You have my sympathy, I was laid up for about 8 weeks with that thing! Mild exercise is supposed to bring relief with some people, but no chance of that with me as I could barely raise my leg without excruciating pain and I ain't a wuss when it comes to pain. The only things that gave me any relief to talk of was diazepam and morphine sulphate tablets, but they come with baggage and GPs are reluctant to prescribe them.

Good luck and hope it eases soon.

Thank you! It seems so unfair that it’s even painful when you’re sitting down 😩

Tell me about it! Probably the worst prolonged pain I've ever experienced and just behind septic arthritis in my hip!

Hi..I d ask for cocodamol 30/500 ..and get plenty of rest. Prop a pillow under your bad side in bed to support it.

Check your back is ok as well. My GP wasted two months and a load of unused amitriptyline that went back to a pharmacy when a second doctor diagnosed a ruptured disc. The Coco damol got me stable as I ended up in agony. Physio was useless they gave me some basic exercises and a big rubbery plastic band to stretch against. Good luck!

I think as offered co-codamal but I’m not keen on anything codiene based.

It’s such a dreadful pain, and it doesn’t matter what you do, you can’t ease it ☹️

my husband had severe sciatica or 3 years till they finally operated on him 11 years ago the only thing that helped was muscle relaxers which he alternated with pain killers

Try using an exercise ball to sit on.

It helped me enormously several years ago, when my sciactic nerve was being pinched by a prolapsed disk.

This is an old ‘remedy’ but worth a try.... sit on a straight back chair (dining chair type) and gently roll your feet forward and back over a rolling pin - it’s not a quick fix and can take several months to help. Sorry I’ve nothing bette to offer you.

Only if you drink it all before

Oh yes!! But as stated by Gnarli the rules say you must drink the wine first 😎

For my OH the only thing that helped was walking. He couldn’t sit down, lie down, or bend down so he spent months walking. The dog was very happy.

For me the only thing that helped was stretching, piriform stretches worked well

I had short course of acupuncture which gave temporary relief, it relaxed the muscles and eased the pain.

Similarly a heat pad helped relax the muscles of too, particularly in bed at night.

And try a cushion between your knees whilst in bed with the heat pad on.

I hope you get some relief.

Hi, I had a bad attack of sciatica a few years ago now. I saw an osteopath, a physiotherapist but in the end it was acupuncture that worked for me.

Hi Sarah you have my sympathy . Since I’ve been of the biologics the sciatica has reappeared . I had steroid injections for hip bursitis and I calmed down for a while . Hips aren’t to bad but the sciatica particularly on the right is running into already painful feet . I totally agree keep moving as I can’t sit lie or sleep . I’m walking around like a zombie as I’m so tired . Helix mentioned the periformis stretches look at YouTube they are definitely worth trying and go with it I’m at week 7 hopefully it will calm down soon 🤞take care 🌷

Poor you, worst pain ever. I found stretching and walking helped the most once I managed to get out of the bed or chair. Hope it eases off soon. X

I was fortunate enough to be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon who ordered an MRI which showed that my spine is collapsing and trapping my sciatic nerve. 2 weeks ago he operated and carried out a spinal decompression. He scraped the surfaces of the affected vertebrae which made room for the nerve. I am very sore from the wound but no sciatic pain. Will have to have some physio and not allowed anything too strenuous for 3 months - no hoovering, ironing, shopping, etc ( think I can manage that) !! Worth it to be free of the sciatic pain and the need for regular nerve block injections.
