I’ve got the dreaded PIP assessment on Friday, my husband passed away a few weeks ago & I really can’t be bothered with it! I didn’t fill the form in very well, I don’t particularly have an back up info!

I have RA, type 2 diabetes, suffer from depression, anxiety & borderline personality disorder. Have asthma, a hernia & am soon to get equipment to use at night for sleep apnoea. But from what I’ve read don’t think I’ll get it and don’t know why I’m putting myself through the assessment.

Hi Jane,

I am so sorry for your loss,

I also have my pip assessment coming up shortly arghhhh,

All I can really say is, it doesn't matter the way that your form was filled in, you can explain face to face exactly how your conditions affect your daily life, and if you can take someone with you to help and support you at the assessment,

I wish you all the very best love

X

just for fun, or to pass some time, go to Benefits and Work website. they have a DIY PIP test, which gives similar results to the DWP test, and is remarkably accurate. If you answer that test and it says you are entitled to between £50 and £120 per week, wouldn't it be great to have that in your purse rather than in the government's. Before you take the B+W test though, just sit down and have a cup of tea, there that's better isn't it. Oh yes, let's make a diary of what you have done since reading this answer..... You have walked to the kettle, picked it up, walked to the kitchen sink and put water in the kettle, then you walked back to the work top and plugged the kettle in, you then walked to the cupboard, took a cup out of the cupboard and walked back to the worktop and put the cup on that, then walked to the fridge to get some milk, you put the tea bag in the cup, poured the water and milk in then walked to the table to put the cup down and have a sit down. No wonder you enjoyed that tea, you certainly worked for it. Now as I was saying look at the B+W questions and answer them truthfully, don't overestimate what you can do nor underestimate the time it takes you to do things. Remember when you go shopping how you have to sit down after paying for your goods, before walking home, or even sometimes you just have to have a cup of tea in the café. Don't forget, all these things count towards why you are allowed this payment. It is to compensate you for the loss of ability to rush around , and do things quickly and as often as you would like. Remember when you would go shopping every day, then every other day, now once a week, and then top up the stuff with bits from the corner shop, even though you know they are a little bit more expensive than the big supermarket. (That too is what this payment is meant to cover). Good luck with your claim.

My Mum and Boyfriend both passed away shortly before having my medical assessment - which I now highly regret not postponing it ( my thought processes were poor and I thought I’d just get it over with ; on hindsight were not so ) Go with your instinct ; ring , explain your husband sadly passed away few weeks ago and ask for appointment / assessment in 6 months , even then it may be too early .... But definitely follow your instinct - I’m sure your husband would say the same .

Hi Jane, losing your husband and now having to face a complex administrative process is not fun :( My condolences on the loss of your husband. I’m sure your entitled to some assistance, I’ve read that you Citizen Advice Bureau might be a good place to go for some assistance, especially for some informed advice about the possibility of success. Don’t give up on it! Cheers Deb :)

Might I suggest that you contact Age concern or one of the similar groups, to see if they might have anyone that could sit in with you? It may be too short notice for them but worth a try.

If not please do have someone with you that has a strong character and is willing to speak out

Also try citizens advice they help with completing this form

Hi Jane sorry for your loss and you do sound as though your illness’ are adequate enough to get some help.

A wonderful member on this forum told me about an organisation called fight back 4 justice and they helped me get my award after it was changed, you do have to pay them a fee but they do all the report writing for you from the first assessment and even the mandatory reconsideration and appeals and can help with the f2f interview if you have one.

Google them and see if it’s something you’d consider you literally have to send them your medical evidence and any proofs and they do al the rest

Thank you, I think I’ll look into that.x

Hi Jane! I have RA and sleep apnea. I can only tell you from my point of view that if you do have it and you are given the CPAP to sleep you will never want to be without it. It is hard to get rest to begin with having RA but add sleep apnea? its a bag of ALL kinds of fun. It won't hurt to get the assesment right?

Hi Jane , so sorry to hear about your husband . I have similar health problems to yourself . My anxiety was so bad in the run up to my assessment that I rang them and they agreed to a home visit. It was much easier for me and they are able to see you in your home environment. It may not be for you but thought I'd mention it .🤗

Thank you. I hardly slept last night with worrying about Friday. My daughter in-law is being amazing taking me to appointments all Over the place, but she doesn’t really know much about how my physical & mental issues affect me. She’s taking me to the assessment for PIP. All I want is forFriday to be over with! .my husband would have said there’s no use worrying, but I can’t help it. I caught a bus early today to get to the nearest town to catch a train to Hull to see RA doctor. He said it’s stress causing all the pain I’m having & wear & tear, & my RA is controlled at the moment! I got to the station, train back to town & bus home, I’m shatteted & in a lot of pain!!

Why did I go to that appointment??

Sorry for your loss but don't give up. With all those conditions you should get it. Don't worry about not filling in form properly as it all rests on that assessment. Make sure you relay just how your conditions affect your daily life. Surely you must have some reports proving you have those conditions? Good luck!

How did the assessment go Jane ?

Hi, I don’t really know how it went. I got upset when I was asked who I live with, it was my husband & he was my carer! The assessor asked if I was ok to continue. I said yes, didn’t want to have to go back!!

Just wait & see I guess?!

Fingers crossed for you. I didn’t think I would get PIP but I did so don’t lose hope. There’s nothing wrong in getting upset, you’re only human and it’s all very recent. They can’t mark you down for that xx
