Baking Soda

nutritionreview.org/2018/05...

This was reported last year, but has anyone (other than me) tried it? Caveat I haven't been diagnosed - with one swollen finger, but stiff hands overnight and pain in the ankles, hips and knees - bloods came back negative. Avoiding oats (indicated in blood reaction test) and fast carbohydrates in general (and especially in the morning) also helps me I think.

However taking a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda in water most days has I believe also helped with remission.

Googling baking soda brings up a host of blood curdling side effects:

If in doubt ask you doctor.

It is also supposed to be beneficial for reflux and kidney disease.

I feel most comfortable taking it after some sweaty exercise when I know my sodium levels will have been reduced. I guess you also be eating some high potassium foods to maintain the potassium/sodium balance.

Thanks for this information, it's really interesting. How long have you been taking it and how would you say it's helped you?

I took it about a month after my first symptoms. Symptoms improved after a few days. I stopped taking it ( as I thought not eating wheat eggs and oats had helped) and symptoms came back after a while. Started taking it again. Symptoms improved again. May be coincidence. I am also taking CoQ10 regularly, so maybe need both.

Was looking at this thread and am wondering whether I am eating too much meat?

Not that I have any problems with my kidneys that I know (yet).

Perhaps the Paddison program would help me (I shall never know as I won't be trying it), but I am thinking about cutting down meat.

I'm the opposite! I tried Paddison first but didnt feel any better. Then had blood test which showed intolerance to rice, potatoes etc all of which I'd been eating! I'm now trying Paleo as I prefer to eat meat/fish rather than carbs anyway so guess it's just personal preference. Not sure if it's making me feel better or not!! Thanks for the info on baking soda.

Yes I think having a food reaction test helps. It may be not all the foods actually contribute to symptoms, but certainly some do.

Baking soda still working for me. Skip a day, feel some pain (in ankle at night). Back on it pains goes away.

Hi Simba1992, Have you found it matters what meal you choose for once a day? Thank you for the links.

I think it's a good idea to take the bicarbonate 1-2 hr after the heaviest meal of the day😊Simba

Thank you—that’s helpful. Im struggling with one early article you sent—2008, the nih one. Their study excluded anyone on steroids. Can this be interpreted to mean that anyone using low dose steroids should NOT take baking soda. It seems the newer studies like grim Science Daily does not really mention anyone excluded from their study. From what I read ( foggy brain & all) it does not appear to contribute to higher blood pressure or heart issues( the salt aspect). Would appreciate your insights on reading. Thanks so much!

Interesting. It does come with massive warnings though. It can cause serious heart issues because of the high sodium content even in small amounts. I’m not sure this is advisable without medical advice. Inflammation can cause raised BP as can steroids. Looks like the study is in its infancy so hopefully, someone clever will be able to adapt this to do all the good stuff without the heart issues.

No - they are different. Don't think it would be good to use that one :) It's baking soda/powder. The stuff that's sometimes used as a raising agent in cakes etc... but, the main ingredient is sodium and used wrongly can be a little dangerous.

Is it baking soda or baking powder? There is a differance!

The same baking soda you use for cleaning. There are instructions on the box how to use it for different purposes.

I have tried it on the past. I am not sure if it helped my RA but was great for my indigestion which was a side effect of one of my medications. Stopped me burping non-stop all day long.
