Hello Rich, I was told six weeks both before and afterwards. In 2012 I had emergency surgery for a fractured skull fo which there was no warning and as a result, I suffered infection and had to undergo a further prolonged hospital stay with moresurgery. So please learn from my misfortune! Good luck.

I had to stop 2 weeks before surgery, and had to wait to restart until the wound was completely healed. Good luck!

Depending on the surgery and recovery time with or without antibiotic's and so on, it's definitely best to check with the surgeon and also your rheumy team. I've been on Humira for 9 years with different surgeries in that time, and the advice has been different each time. As a general rule it's been two weeks before and two weeks after if all straight forward. Good luck. X

Hi Richard, I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and hopefully not confuse things too much. Prior to both total knee replacements I was told to stop Humira for 10 weeks as it has a wash-out period of 70 days. This was for several reasons - mainly, historically I'm a slow healer (probably because of methotrexate) and also TKR is a very invasive operation with a high risk of infection which of course goes with the territory if you're immuno-suppressed. Each time I was allowed to re-start Humira two weeks after surgery, once it was clear the wound was healing properly and infection risk was reduced.

I reckon it's down to a combination of how you tend to heal, the type of surgery and the approach of your surgeon - mine was particularly cautious, as most orthopaedics are, because if infection gets into the bone it can be really serious.

Good luck, hope all goes well.
