Is anyone in the UK on Methotrexate and also taking/taken Dextromethorphan (eg Robitussin) for the side effects?
I see this mentioned as a possible remedy for side effects all the time in the FB support groups I’m in, but it’s always only the US people and not the UK. I’m in the UK and have been having bad side effects (mainly nausea and fatigue), despite high dose folic acid.
I want to try the Dextromethorphan as everyone on the US forums seems to suggest it, but I’ve mentioned it to both rheumy nurse and a Boots pharmacist and they have never even heard of it for MTX side effects.
Anyone in the UK taken this? Did it help?
Thanks in advance
Lucy

I've never come across this on the helpline, so I suspect, as you say, that it is used more in the US than the UK. I have had a look online to see if there was any study data to back it up, which could give you something to show your nurse. I have found some information suggesting that it can help with methotrexate induced 'neurotoxicity' and effects on the nervous system, but I couldn't find anything related to symptoms such as nausea and fatigue.
Hopefully one of the US users of this forum will be able to come on here and tell you more about its use in the US. Sorry we couldn't be of more help.
I've been taking Robitussin the last few days for my tickley cough, the pharmacist gave it to me after checking what meds I'm on (Rituximab, mtx, Sulfa, Bisoprolol) . She warned me that it was very addictive due to the ingredients main one being Dexomethorphan. Because of that I have only taken it at night, rather than the four times a day as prescribed. So with that I would be very careful in taking it.
I don't have any side effects from mtx now so can't say of it has helped. Rie
I live in the US and have never heard of taking Robitussin for side effects of methotrexate. That is interesting, I'll have to keep up with this post to see what other people say. Have a pain free day.
Hi there is a you tube by a DR Timothy Lonenxy. He discusses rheumatoid and he recommended the dxm for neural toxicity from methotrexate. I haven’t tried it but I will as if it stops that blah head feeling it is worth a try.
Came across this post while searching for something else. Based in UK. Suffered terribly from nausea/fatigue/headaches. In a methotrexate group on FB and someone suggested Robitussin Dry cough. It has worked a treat for me. No headache, no nausea the day after. I kept hydrated and drunk ginger tea as well. If you are on FB, it is worth joining the group. All the information is in the announcements section.
