My son has recently taken up astro-photography . Here's his very first effort - The Milky Way photographed far away from any light pollution at a dark sky site in the wilds of Mid-Wales. Image was taken with a common or garden DSLR camera fixed to a portable motorised star tracking mount. A second photo to follow.

Thanks Paul, I think he'll like that comment, so I'll make a point of not telling him. ;-) Seriously though, we're very pleased with them, especially the M31 image, which due to being the smaller fainter object made it the more difficult of the two to photograph.

Thanks Sylvi. He's already got the next target lined up. Just a matter of waiting for suitable conditions such as a moonless clear night, which can mean quite a wait with our weather.

Absolutely marvellous, what a fantastic sight. Something I have always thought of doing, this may have given me the push. I believe they have set up special dark areas in Derbyshire for night sky watching, may be worth a visit. Thanks for cheering me up - are we alone lol x

Many amateur astronomy clubs do have open nights at most dark sky sites, where for a small fee you can have a look through different members telescopes. So do a bit of googling, then wrap up warm and away you go. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
