Celecoxib are not working anymore

completely-zero654 profile image

Please can anyone give me/my husband who is 61 any advice, my husband has Osteoarthritis and has been on Celecoxib 200 mg daily for several years now, he has both knee joints, hip joint and neck pain. He had one of his knees "cleaned out" years and years ago. For pain his G.P. prescribed co-codamol. Has anyone else had this and has anyone found that after taking this medication for several years it does not kill the pain in the joints any longer. Would be very grateful to anyone who can help as unsure where to go from here.

Well, celecoxib was one of the first NSAID's I was prescribed when I was first diagnosed & the longer I took it it became less effective so I was prescribed a different one. It's true in some cases our bodies can become used to medication over time, maybe it's time for him to ask his GP (or whoever prescribes for his OA) for an alternative. Another option may be as he's only on 200mg his dose could be doubled, 200mg in the morning & 200mg at night, according to his GP's instruction, but I would think the better option would be to change to another if he's been on celecoxib a while. I'm prescribed etoricoxib, like celecoxib it's in the same COX-2 group, it's been my longest serving & most helpful of the 5 or so NSAID's I've been prescribed.

Another option is maybe a review of any specific joints which may be more painful, thinking if his knees are in need of cleaning out again as it's been a while other joints are also?

I hope this helps.

Hello nomoreheels, thank you for replying to me, I will certainly tell him about this, he never ever complains and continues in pain each day looking after me (I am disabled to an extent), and really want to help him.

You're welcome. There's really no need for him to be in pain, though I do appreciate how painful OA can be when the meds don't work because as well as RD I have it too. Thankfully it is controlled with a suitable NSAID & pain relief & your husband's can be again too. Wish him all the best from me.

Bless you, I most certainly will. Also hope that pain relief you have will continue so that you are not in too much pain. It is always good people that get pain from different ailments and not others who do bad things, it is not fair.

I thank you for your help and being so kind, take care.

Hia,

Worked well for me for many years, I took the max dose 200mg twice a day. The conditions we are talking about all get worse with time. Has he considered that its just the progression of the disease and that he needs to up the dose(with the green light from Doc obv)or try tramadol or another pain med?

D
