prednisone/Cortancyl and salt & sugar intake

Hey Everyone,

My doctor incresead my dose of Cortancyl from 5 mg to 10 mg for 2 weeks and asked me to reduce my sugar and salt intake during this time but she didn't specify by how much

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Do you know the quantities we are allowed to take?

What about fruits ? does the sugar in them count?

Thanks

lilah

Prednisolone can increase the glucose levels in the blood & in some instances can cause steroid induced diabetes. Maybe she's concerned about your blood glucose & sodium levels & why you've been asked to reduce both. These two links may help nhs.uk/Livewell/Goodfood/Pa... & diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-di...

Thank you, I'll check the links

I personnally don't have any previous problems related to blood glucose & sodium levels

I thought that all doctors advise their patients to reduce salt and sugar when they prescribe steroids

Hi Liliah, They didn't tell me specifically what to do re salt and sugar but I kept very sensible whilst on the Pred for 10 months. I'm always checking anything with labels for that! I had blood tests for glucose levels twice during Pred and then again when I finished and just recently to check, a year after at my annual MOT blood tests. All was fine. Yes I think to keep steady with salt and sugar is a very good idea but I am always salt cautious anyhow as it makes me dehydrated (and I'm always thirsty due to meno and dry mouth!)

You have asked the question that I've been meaning to ... How much sugar in fruits can we safely eat, and more so when taking oral steroids.

Here's what's apparently in fruits. I love grapes but do stick to the handful .. Not the bunch!

I think this may be more helpful with the images. I'm off to count my grapes now! 🍇😁

Hi Liliah

Oral steroids gave me steroid induced Diabetes. It is very forward thinking of your GP to give you a heads up regards your salt and sugar intake.

My eyesight went bananas overnight, I was called in as an emergency and had to take all sorts of drugs to combat the high sugar levels in my blood but they wouldn't let me come off the steroids either.

Two years on , I am not on steroids just Benepali and Hydroxychloroquine and thank heavens my diabetes has resolved.

I'm sure this will not happen to you as I was on an extremely high dose of Prednisalone due to the severity of onset with RA , but I would just take extra care with your diet and keep alert to any signs of frequent urination and excessive thirst.

I'm sure you will be fine.
