Can u get cystitis while your on methotrexate???

Not sure if it's the MTX or just our immune system failure. I've had several E coli infections - feels like cystitis but peeing blood, needed antibiotics. Not sure if this helps you. Hope you feel better soon. xo

You can get the all the same infections that you normally get. Methotrexate doesn't prevent you getting anything.

Hi DJJ, Sorry to hear you are not so good. I have had cystitis the last two Summers when I've had my Rituximab infusions. (Before then it was 35 years ago I last had a bladder infection.) Annoyingly last Summer I had to postpone the second infusion for three weeks but this had no detrimental affects. I haven't had cystitis when I have had the infusions in the winter. Due to Fentanyl pain patches and the hot weather (and the crazy hormones!) I get dehydrated easily despite drinking a lot and I have had to have a week's antibiotics to clear it. I'd been on Methotrexate for some time before Rituximab as my sole medication for RA and I never had one UTI etc in ten years so I can't say Mtx has done that to me but we are all different. I sip/drink water all the time now in the Summer and lemon barley squash too. I adore that. I also take cranberry capsules but I had a UTI whilst on those last time so not sure that's worked for me?! Maybe I hadn't been taking them long enough. My doc and pharmacist said ... Water water water. I did try the teaspoon of baking powder in a glass of water and it seemed to alleviate symptoms quickly but next day I got in with the GP for a prescription and started antibiotics. I read somewhere recently that blackcurrants are better than cranberries for clearing the bladder of the germs. My rheumy nurse said that she has had quite a few of her Rituximab patients get UTI's following the infusions. Makes sense as the immunity is so depleted. I hope you feel better soon. Neonkittie X
