Good morning all ..my question is can you have both gout and rheumatoid arthritis? I feel like I have both as I have pain in both feet at times then at other times a different pain with swelling in just one foot which is burning hot while the other foot is normal ..I'm not sure if it's possible to have gout and ra together

Hi,

The answer is yes and a simple blood test will rule it in or our for you.

All the best

You can have both. Sadly many people have several auto-immune diseases.

However, it could also be your RA as it can vary a lot and doesn't always attack symmetrically. Goût is quite a different type of pain/swelling that is very distinctive. Get it checked out....

my husband gets gout - in various joints - the inflicted joint gets very hotired very swollen and excruciatingly painful. like he can't even bear the weight of a sheet on it. He takes Allopurinol daily to reduce attacks and colchicine during an catwalk. the attacks make him feel very unwell indeed. Blood test confirmed high uric acid. but the consultant also mentioned pseudo gout a similar condition. so not straightforward by any means. hope you can get some help

I was wrongly diagnosed as having gout when in fact I had RA, but wasn't given blood tests for 8 months. I had to force my swollen foot into shoes in order to limp to work. Have you had blood tests?

Hya, I was diagnosed with gout 5 years ago, but the drs thought I had it in the wrong part of my foot (down the side) then when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis they looked back my notes and said it wasn't gout it was the start of my RA.😞😞

Hiya Ann, not seen you around for a while, hope you're well? Can I ask, you saying you had trouble down the side of your foot. Was it the outer side? Can you expand please? Was it particularly painful & were you told what the cause was, really looking for a name for it in a similar vein to plantar fasciitis.

Hya, yes it was the outside of my left foot, 4 times I was sent to the hospital for tests, and then the blood tests came back saying that it was gout, drs thought it was really strange, so when my RA was diagnosed they said that was what was wrong and I don't have gout. Lol. I've been about, was at Clifton hospital on Monday, they reckon my inflammation markers are up, still lots better than I was though. Going to Worthing in 2 weeks to visit family and enjoy the warm weather. Xx

Have you been diagnosed or are you asking if it could be the start of RD? I ask as when I first had foot pain, before diagnosis, my h was convinced I was troubled with gout. I wasn't so sure & went to my GP basically to prove him wrong but not actually knowing myself what the cause was. It was at that appointment RF & anti-CCP were taken following examination as she strongly suspected RD.

I'm not sure this helps much, except that RD often presents in the feet first, as well as the hands so I'd definitely see your GP.

Hi I've got ra diagnosed few years ago also osteoarthritis n osteoporosis. .this doesn't feel like ra or osteoarthritis

I'd see your GP then, as has already been said you can have both & if it's red then it's even more likely but your GP will determine with a blood test I would think.
