I would tell your doc! Naproxen shoild really only be used short term. I had trouble with it too, and had to come off. Actually didn't work any way.

Are you ok on ibuprofen?

My sister is allergic to all the NSAIDs, including Naproxen. She comes out in an itchy rash and then swells up. Tell your doctor..

Docs aren't great at noticing (or accepting) of drug reactions...in my experience.

You have a dorky doctor. Look at the patient information leaflet that comes with the packet of Naproxen and I think you'll find it says "if you have an allergic reaction stop taking the tablets and tell your doctor". It probably also lists itching as a possible side effects. They wouldn't include that if it didn't happen from time to time.

Maybe you need to suggest your doctor reads the leaflet.....

I'd be tempted to stop the naproxen, it would seem you're having an allergic response. By the sounds of it you're needing something until you see your Rheumy so I'd see if your GP can prescribe something else with the intention of taking until your see him/her, he/she may or may not prefer to prescribe a different one, even a different class. I'd continue with the ibuprofen til you can see your GP, even though you think it's not that good it's probably better than nothing. Do you have a PPI (stomach protector), omeprazole or similar? They're usually prescribed alongside NSAIDs as they're intended to stop tum troubles.

I can't believe your GP dismissed that it could be a side effect. It clearly says on the PIL under Possible side effects

Stop taking Naproxen tablets and contact your doctor immediately if you

have an allergic reaction:

skin reactions including: hives (pale/red raised skin with severe itching), blistered skin, itchy skin rash, blood spots, bruising or discolouring of the skin, raised purple rashes, red skin patches, a severe rash with reddening, peeling and swelling of the skin that resembles burns, bumpy, rashes, blisters, dermatitis (skin shedding, itching, swelling)

I suggest you take the PIL with you when you request an alternative NSAID.

Stop taking it and tell your doctor!!!!! Also they can give you something else as there are lots of different nsaids out there. There are also stronger pain meds too. 🙂
