No problem, the morphine should help you cope until the DMARDs start working. If they help you then absolutely great.

Hi Lainygordon

I too take hydroxy for my RA and have also been given oromorph for extra pain relief should I need it.

I take my hydroxy in the morning along with co codamol 30/500.

If I Find I am still in pain later in the day I have on 2 occasions taken a dose of morphine and it seems to help.Mainly because I cant feel anything .I Find the morphine far too strong for me and sends me off the planet, and nauseous .I dont like how it affects me .

No one has ever told me I should not take hydroxy and morphine at the same time, but morphine is a very strong drug.

I think it's advisable to check with your surgery / pharmacist in the morning just to make sure it is safe to take these two in combination. The oromorph is in liquid form, maybe the advice is different for morphine in tablet form..

Take care.

It's really best not to take any medication unless you run it past your doctor.

It's always advisable to check with your GP or Rheumy even if you have meds in the house which have been prescribed for something else, just in case they're contraindicated with other meds you're presently prescribed or even out of date. Also, he/she could determine if that's going to be the best option for you, it could be something else may target your pain better. It sounds as though if it is a trapped nerve your pain is neurological, there are meds which work better on that type of pain. For instance I'm prescribed amitriptyline for neck & shoulder nerve entrapment, it also works as a relaxant so will be helpful as a sleep aid, if it's prescribed that is. So please don't self medicate.

I use Fentanyl patches and Oramorph. My GP put me on them for pain after an Osteoporosis diagnosis. I wish I'd never started them, as trying to come off them is a nightmare!

I'm am also taking hydroxychloroquine 400gm and I just started taking methotrexate 25mg orally plus folic acid, and I have been on it for about 6 weeks now. My rheumatologist said it could take up to 3 months before I'll notice a difference. I feel like my body is failing me at a fast rate. I also take Advil and Ibuprofen gel caps to relieve pain. It used to be the weather that determined what kind of day it was going to be for me. Not anymore summer is around the corner and it's getting warmer outside but I still wake up feeling paralyzed. I was let go from my workplace because I was slowing down in my walking and I couldn't lift anything more than 10lbs, I was embarrassed. My rheumatologist told me that I'll be able to go back to my job once the methotrexate starts working in my system. For those of you who are taking the methotrexate and been on it for more than 3 months, my question is, Do you really get better when you are on the MTX for a longer period? Do you actually stop hurting?

Dear Lainygordon, I take morphine tablets MST & Oromorph as well as morphine patches. There was no problem as far as my rheumatologist & GP were concerned. I also have other strong medications & actually am seeing the GP to organise a stronger pain patch. I never took tablets & could not have imagined that I would be on such an amount. However when one's life is consumed with pain the person accepts that medication is one of the hopes for a life worth living !! Like Bo Peep I often wonder 'do you actually stop hurting?'! Even so It is important to always be responsible with medications no matter what their strength or type. If your doctor has ordered them then you can take them as prescribed. Nerve pain is horrendous & overwhelming and so so hard to deal with. I am thinking & empathising with you & all who have Pain. I really hope you get a few nights of undisturbed sleep.
