Hi I am due to have a steroid injection in my shoulder don't normally worrie about injections but relly nervous about this one has have heard and know people like my sister who had the same in the same place and said it's relly painfull relly worried any answers would be appreciated

I have had an injection in my shoulder, it's not that bad, you will get relief from the pain. The only thing it didn't last long for me, but everyone's different, good luck.

I have had an injection in my Hip ten days ago and finding the area was more painful than the needle. I have Burisitis in both hips and was told it is a complication of RA. I will be going back for another injection next week as this one didn't work on the hip only on my fingers and wrist.

Ive had several shoulder injections in the past , it can be uncomfortable but not too bad . Its definitely not as bad as the pain i had in my shoulder!!

I've been trying brought this and for all I went through it didn't take long, also afterwards it didn't help me.

I've had quite a few injections into my shoulder, none of which were really painful. Uncomfortable, yes but not painful. Clemmie

I have had some shoulder steroid injections - couple of different sites, some behind and one in the side. I think the thought is worse. It is uncomfortable but not for long and for me did what we needed it to do. Do take it easy afterwards to allow the meds to work where you need them to in the joint. It may make the pain worse for a while (24 hours) before settling down. Farm

I had one towards the end of last year & to be honest pressing around finding the correct place to inject was more uncomfortable than the injection itself & the relief it brings is definitely worth a moment's discomfort. Usually there's a local anaesthetic which goes in first then the steroid follows to ease any pain you may have, maybe your sisters didn't. I suppose like all injections it's down the administer's confidence & regularity injecting that makes all the difference. Also you trying to relax will help, tensing up whilst it's been done won't help. Mine's lasted a good long while, I can still move my shoulder freely, able to turn when reversing the car so no more relying on just mirrors so for that & being relieved of the pain I'd not hestate to have another if the time comes! One thing, don't do anything with that shoulder for the rest of the day at least otherwise the steroid migrates away from the intended area & you'll not have the same relief.

Go for it, the relief is worth it & anyway you've got RD so even if unlike the rest of us it's more uncomfortable you're used to a little pain. It could well be because your sister hasn't got RD (well, you don't say she has) that's why she found it painful?

Dave, hope your steroid injection goes well, and not too painful. I have had many joint injections in my shoulders, knees, ankles, hands and elbows. I have had a lot worse things done. My Dr always adds lidocaine and that does help. It is the steroid medication itself which tends to be one of the more painful things to have injected. I have had so much pain with bursitis in my shoulders that I was OK getting the shots because the relief from the injection is quite evident by the next day. Just breathe while it's being done. The relief is well worth any pain! Good Luck!

I asked to have my injection in the bottom and it didn't hurt at all . In the shoulder can be more painful for some reason . So don't be afraid to tell them to inject it in a less painful area. Good luck . Nothing to worry about.

I always thought steroid travels to the area of the problem in the body no matter where you inject .

There are localised (or local) steroid injections & general steroid injections. Local are injected in the area of where the pain & inflammation is. General, the type you had in your bottom, are systemic, meaning it has an effect on the whole of the body & so better for widespread inflammation. If you have a particularly inflamed & painful joint it won't necessarily be as helpful for that joint as a local.

No, not at all, it will still travel to a specific inflamed joint just it wouldn't be as effective as a local would be. Generals have their uses, they can make you feel wonderful normality for as long as it works!

I should have read your down prior to my post. You certainly gave a much better explanation!! My meds have been all switched up. I feel as though my brain is mush. Better to wait until I am not so loopy. Cindy

There are injections into your muscle which go throughout your body, so yes to That! But if you have only some joint pain from arthritis or bursitis, etc. The doctor can inject directly into the affected joint or in case of bursitis, they inject into the bursa. Those types of injections stay primarily in the specific area of injection. If you are having a general flare up or even an allergic reaction and have hives, or poison ivy, they a shot in your bottom or hip would act systemically or throughout your body.

Don't worry Dave it is slightly painful but I was able to lift my arm afterwards I had a torn tendon though anyway it is really not bad

I had 3 or 4 hydrocortisone injections in my shoulder. I had a local first, lidocaine I think. It's not bad at all!! It has a better result if the injection is administered while being directed to the affected area with the help of an ultrasound scan, so that they can see where to inject. If not, it is done blind but it will still work. Mine only ever helped for about a week but hopefully you will be different. The injection itself is nothing to worry about. A couple of seconds of discomfort and it's over!! Good luck and don't worry!! Frankie 63

I get those injections in the joints in my wrists, my cervical and thoracic spine and in my bursas. The stick doesn't hurt, its the pressure when the steroid goes in that I hate. They are worth it

You probably had it done by now but if not its really not that bad if you dont tense up relief actually came 2 to 3 days after and i am still ok a month later, Good luck! 14penny

I have had several. Hardly felt it. The pain in my shoulder was far worse, the releif when it got working was wonderful.
