Methotrexate and fertility

Hi everyone,

I'm new here ,I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2010 when I was 22 years old and I've been taking methotrexate since then. I 'm always wondering if it may cause some infertility problems after taking it so long .

Could someone please share their experience or information related to this subject.

Thanks :)

Hello. I'm not a doctor but you should wait a few months until the mtx is out of your system before you get pregnant.

Mtx is also used to end an etopic pregnancy, as it induces a misscarriage. My friend was told to wait 4 to 6 months before she tried to get pregnant again.

It shouldn't make you infertile but you must speak to your consultant if you want to have a baby. You have to come off the mtx for a certain amount of time to get it out of your system. X

Hi, I'm 57 now and was diagnosed with RA when I was 32, my Dr said no metrotexate or imuran instead I was on 10mg prednisone. I was taking it but notice that if I took it at night it worked better, I also took a lot of vitamins. Especially Glucisamine, chondroitin and msm. There is a company called yongevity who are amazing! Try it you might just get rid if it now that you are starting. I wish I knew then what I know now. I am also eating gluten free and notice a change in my RA. And drink a glass of water with table spoon of vinegar. I wish I knew that prednisone eats up your bones! Now I have osteoporosis and started Humira. I also read that RA usually comes from a flu treated with the wrong antibiotic! The RA is a bacteria smaller then a bacteria and only few Dr's know about this and the only way to know is by getting a special blood Dna PCR TEST! Well, good luck!

It will probably not be easy but will be worth it. You will need support from your rheumy team and GP but they may not have much experience as the majority of their patients are older. You must let the MTX out of your system before trying which of course allows the RD to move back in which is where you need to have a good relationship with your team to help you through pregnancy and afterwards be ready to restart treatment when needed but if you are thinking of another child should (in my opinion) not be MTX. I was one of the lucky ones in that my symptoms eased whilst pregnant and for a while afterwards but unfortunately that is not true in every case. Of course things have probably changed since my pregnancies in 1988, 1990, 2000 and 2002. If your friends/family already have babies look at their (car seat/pushchair etc) and how it folds and fastens baby in as you have to think more carefully about how you can use it, height for pushing and carrying. I was diagnosed 1971, took MTX from 1980, had first child 1993 & second 1996, absolutely no problems. Advice regarding how long to stop MTX has changed since I was in that situation, so best speak to your Rheumatologist about that. Good luck, things should be fine.

Thanks Boney that 's very reassuring for me to know that you had kids after taking MTX for a long period
