Has no one suggested that the effusion should be drained and a specimen of the fluid sent for testing? It could be that you need antibiotics for an infection. Clemmie

Is your uric acid level raised compared to the normal for testing in your area? Do you think you have gout?

You need a diagnosis first of why you have the effusion.

Hi,

I have had swelling on both knees for some time, (now on leflunomide for RA) but the one knee is still problematic. I go to the hospital, probably about 2/3 times a year and they drain in, which is straight forward and has been painless, such a relief to get all that fluid of my knee. The Doctor also puts a steroid injection in the knee afterwards, which keeps it at bay for a couple of months. Always feel great when it has been drained.
