I am taking Leflunomide for RA and have been prescribed Amoxicillin for chest infection. Can anyone tell me if I have to stop taking the Leflunomide whilst taking the Amoxicillin. Have tried to contact my Rheumy Nurse but it's usually 48 hours before they get back to you. Thanks.x

Good question. Is there anyone else you can ask this question to get a reply quickly? Maybe the person who prescribed the antibiotic? Good luck. Cheers Doreen

Ask your pharmacist, they are qualified to tell you.

I'm on methotrexate injection and I've taken amoxicillin a few times and still carried on with my injection, my GP told me to, I was on another antibiotic and the chap at the chemist told me to check it was ok to take because of my medication, he said it had flagged up on the computer to check, that time I didn't have my injection, so if you can't get an answer from your nurse I'd either ring your GP for advise or ask at the chemists. All depends on how bad your chest infection is.

I didn't have to stop with it, but you better ask your GP if the Rheumy cannot be contacted! Get Well soon, wish you all the best!

As Leflunomide takes two months to clear your system it is pointless stopping it. I was told this by a GP. I stop my Entracept but keep taking my Leflunomide when taking amoxicillin since. Hope you feel better soon x

I'm taking leflunomide and injecting entercept, the ruling I've been given:

ANY TIME I'm taking antibiotics STOP both medications until I'm better especially when it's for CHEST INFECTION. I need to have completely stopped having mucus on the chest before restarting medication.

The ruling came from medical team at hospital. This last winter I was off all for three weeks due to this ruling, and my own GP adheres to the ruling.

For your own peace of mind I would contact your own medical team and your GP for their advise.

I've never stopped taking Leflunomide when on antibiotics, even when in hospital for 14 days on IVs for Bronchiectasis. I even continued to take it when having chemo. But it is always best to check with your medics to be sure.

I realise this discussion was two years ago but I have exactly the same problem. I am on very low leflunomide with 1 mg prednisolone and have just been prescribed 500mgs amoxicillin for a dental infection. Unfortunately I have just finished day 2 (5 in total) and feel dizzy. No one to ask unless I 111 which seems over the top. Anyone else experienced similar?
