I do at times too & it's when I reach for crisps, naughty on both counts, salt & fats. How it was explained to me that it's usually our body telling us that somethings amiss or we're not holding the sodium we get naturally through our foods. I notice more when I'm being very careful with my salt intake, usually when I've had my cholestorol levels checked! If you have an open mind this might be worth a read, just don't freak out, you won't relate to all of it but some parts you may find informative just now adrenalfatiguesolution.com/....

,,,& why it doesn't always help googling! It passes I find. We use little salt in cooking & I try not to add more on my plated meal. I wouldn't ever cut it out entirely unless advised to do so as I find it can lead to cramp. I know if I've eaten something abnormally salty as I'm so thirsty afterwards, Chinese, gammon, bacon, things like that. Difficult as well determining as I have terrible dry mouth through meds too! But one thing we found was when lived abroad we used more in the warmer months as we lost more through perspiration. The recommendation from our individual health professionals was to increase our salt intake & found it difficult to do! It's one of those things that too much isn't good but equally too little isn't either, it's getting the balance right. My bp has always been bob on so obviously it hasn't been an issue for me but it's a different story for my h & we're eating the same things. I guess it just goes to prove it's an individual thing.

Definitely mention it to your GP & have him check your bp & heart rate.

I assumed my salt cravings where to do with all the water I drink, far more than the '8 glasses a day'. I'm also on diuretics so thought that must reduce the salt I keep in my body. I rarely eat ready meals and don't put much in cooking. I crave it mainly in the form of oxo cubes to make a drink. I agree that your body tells you what you need and you cannot live without salt and fat so it makes sense to crave it if you have a deficiency.

Personally if you crave salt it is your body telling you that you are lacking salt. Refined table salt is very bad for you as it has had the minerals we need taken out. Our bodies need salt but it should be sea or Himalayan salt. I have been enjoying sea salt these last few weeks on my food, it has made it taste so much better and we are cooking with it again. We need the minerals for our bone mineral density. I take a pinch and sprinkle, then it is not too much. Enjoy! shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/...

Are you on steroids? If so it could be a symptom of low cortisol levels as you get in adrenal insufficiency. I had this and a collection of other symptoms and eventually was diagnosed with this. It was caused by long term steroid use. It is worth speaking to your doctor as this and Addison's disease can be problematic if untreated.

I agree with the above. Craving salt and nausea and vomiting can be due to low cortisol levels signalling adrenal insufficiency. Ask your doctor to get your levels checked via an ACTH blood test. They take blood in the morning then inject some cortisol and take blood at intervals afterwards to see how you respond. I have adrenal insufficiency due to long term steroid use, although only at low levels but over many years. Good luck.

Salt cravings can be linked to Adrenals.

I had salt cravings, I asked my Doctor if it was to do with my condition of Hypothyroidism, she said no, but couldn't think what it was to do with. (I thought it a little odd a Doctor not knowing about salt cravings.)

My salt cravings lessened, the same time as I upped my thyroid medication. it is well known that some Hypothyroid patient's adrenals can be healed by 'optimum' thyroid medication.

Doctors don't seem to acknowledge sluggish or struggling adrenals.
