Please don't think you've given in accepting an opiate med Iain, your GP obviously thinks they're necessary to relieve the pain you're in. Having said that I was a tad resistant after going through my options when my Rheumy asked my GP to perform a full pain med review for my OA. Having scooted down the list saying no to tramadol, gabapentin, pregabalin etc I hesitated on BuTrans transdermal patches & been on them coming up to 3 months. I have monthly reviews & see her again next week when I'll see if she considers I need another increase in dose. I must say they have really helped, those & an increase in amitriptyline are letting me have better nights anyway so I hope the morphine tablets do the same for you. So don't you think you're giving in accepting strong pain relief, try to focus on it as being necessary to relieve the pain of flaring. x

Don't beat yourself up about this, hopefully it will be a short term fix until the flare subsides. The important thing is that you have effective pain relief, so that you sleep better, and perhaps be able to do some gentle exercise once it is controlled. Then you have a chance of breaking the downward spiral, and be able to take control of your RD

It is a wretched disease, and I'm sorry that you're having such a rotten time.

Hope the morphine kicks in, and you get some relief soon. M x

Sorry to hear you're still having problems Iain. After trying several types of pain relief, which had next to no effect on some serious sciatica, I was eventually prescribed slow release morphine tabs. The pain was so bad I had no hesitation at all taking it, to be honest I'd have tried anything to get some relief. The morphine did not stop the pain entirely but got it to a far more tolerable level. Downside was it made me feel pretty grotty..lost my appetite, was nauseous and constipated. Also had hallucinations, which except for the odd freaky one were actually quite pleasent. :)

Hope the morphine works and you don't get any adverse side effects like I did.

Belated congrats on being awarded PIP..I just noticed your post about it. I thought you'd get it..and I'm a glass half empty sort of bloke. :)

sorry you are feeling so much pain you could feel much better after a short burst of the morphine you are in control of what you take ,my doc gave me some it helped then I went back on pain killers.

What did they tell you about how long you might take them and how you're advised to reduce? I'm so sorry you have such pain. I've friends who had morphine after joint replacements - one rather enjoyed the feeling- but she's never mentioned that she had difficulty coming off them. Pain is so wearing so I do hope this helps.

Sorry Iain you are having such a challenging time, I hate RD too at the moment, my flare is not subsiding. I hope the morphine brings some much needed pain relief, and the cimzia kicks in for you VERY SOON. Hang in there, better times ahead.

Hi guys & gals, sorry not had a chance to reply to you all, have tried several times on my phone but still having issues with it, so on my laptop now, thanks to you all for the kind words of support, flaring really bad and most joints 3 times their normal size, seems like the Morphine is working and taking the edge of a bit..is it wrong to actually enjoy it? not sure but will whilst it works no point not enjoying I don't think, another 6 days to my 2nd dose of Cimzia so hoping it kicks in sooner rather than later, hope you are all well as can be x

Sorry to hear about your flare. It always seems a defeat when you have to give in and take a really strong painkiller; but it is for the best, because you get that all important sleep and rest without the pain and discomfort. Having had fibromyalgia for years before being diagnosed with RA, I seem to have existed on painkillers since my teens. Must have contributed thousands to the coffers of the pharmaceutical industry! I do hope you feel better soon. Yep, it is a frustrating disease.

Hi, I am on MST morphine tablets, slow release over 12 hours. They have helped my pain so much and I am under the pain clinic and get checked regularly !! I had to stop them after spinal injections quite quickly and suffered no side effects. I was so worried about morphine being addictive but my consultant reassured me. I do have liquid morphine but only use if my pain keeps me awake and I am passed myself. The bottle is a year old and not a lot out of it!!! I guess all I can say is it has helped my mobility and to cope with pain. I hope that helps a bit. like anything we all cope with drugs differently and for me it works well. Take care x

You asked if we thought you should enjoy it. Within the limits of the dose I'd go for any pleasure you can get in moments without pain. A friend ( who is v respectable) says the mirphine she was given after her hip op was a bit too nice but saw her through, helped no doubt by the fact that her nhs op was done at murray field private just above the zoo so she could hear the animals waking up in the morning!

I really hope you feel better soon
