Tear occured following chronic inflammation. Then miss management following delayed diagnosis. Now need open repair surgery, using tendon from my big toe.
Warning Do Not Have steriods injected into achilles tendon sheath. I did an sure this exacerbate problem.

A friend of mine tore her Achilles' tendon, which was very serious for her as she's a stage performer and needs to move fluidly. She had the surgery, and eventually recovered 100% but said that the physio was long and hard. It did take months. Hope all goes well for you. Polly
Yes, definitely a warning about injecting steroids into tendons, and unfortunately a lot of doctors still aren't aware of the research on this that clearly shows its not a good idea (because it makes the tendon brittle and more inclined to rupture or tear). - not to be confused with injecting steroids right into the joint, which apparently is still OK and works well for other sorts of problems.
Sorry you are having to go through this, but hope you have a good surgeon and the repair works well. I believe, from someone I know who had it done, that its a long slow haul to recover and get full function back, but worth it if you follow the rehab instructions closely.
