Hello, I have had both my thumb tendons ruptured thankfully at different times. After having been very painful for a long time the pain was decreased. Both happened during the night. It's an odd thing not being able to use your thumb. I eventually had a replacement tendon op. They took a tendon from my index finger and put it in my thumb. Sadly if it happens again I can't have that done as they can only do it once. I hope you are able to get it fixed too. Good luck.

Hi dippyd09

thank you for your reply, I'm going to go ahead with the procedure now, as feel a lot better now i know it works after the op, you hear things like "oh i had it done and it hasn't work."

I've got in my thumb, its bad enough having RD in my hands as it is, without having a thumb you can't do anything with lol.

I am glad to hear it. You do have to do physio afterwards but mine have both been very successful. Good luck.

Hi Moses5. I had this happen in my thumb 33 years ago while waiting for my first rheumatology appointment. Operated on and all fine since. X

Ahh thats what i wanted to hear Gigi71 thank you, I will have the procedure done now, as was a little worried if it didn't work properly after, really confident now.

No, but I feel it may happen soon with one of my fingers :( Couple of good replies above, hope this sorts itself for you. Good luck, cheers Deb :)

Yes, as above, I had a ruptured tendon in my thumb after having a lump on my hand for some time. As mentioned above, a tendon from my index finger was re-routed. (apparently some people have an 'extra' tendon in the wrist which can be used, which I didn't have!). Pleased to say the operation was a complete success, scars are now invisible & after 15 years or so I forget it has been done. As someone else said - very weird feeling when your thumb won't work!

Yes. It happened without me realising. Suddenly overnight I found I couldn’t use my pen properly and then noticed my finger wasn’t functioning properly. I asked my GP and he said yes, your tendon is shot!

I was a bit worried but it seemed the Gp wasn’t.Prior

to it doing this it had been swollen and sore.i hope you are okay. Worrying to say the least. I

I’ve had three rupture, left thumb which was repaired and two in my right hand, little finger and ring finger, both of them had to be saddled onto my mid finger as too bad todo total repair. The repair to thumb good movement but the two saddled to the next finger I have not got complete control of them but much better than being totally useless.

How did you rupture your thumb, just curious

I have a severe form of RA and it was not well controlled for 25 yrs. I got excessive tenosynovitis in my hands along with large nodules and cysts. My wrists basically collapsed and fused naturally, I’ve also had darachs procedures on both hands, my knuckles on both of my hands have dissolved away and I’m missing 3 joints which at some point will need replacing. I’ve subluxation of the right thumb and have had total of 6 surgeries so far to them. My thumb ruptured basically because of inflammation caused by the RA and we use our thumbs an awful lot. Long story but you need the picture. My feet are even worse😀

It has been but I’ve been on biologics for 6yrs know and things are better, but I developed further unrelated spinal and osteoarthritis problem but the RA is now well controlled, so life’s not as bad as it could be😀

I’m very interested to read your experiences. I am waiting to have this operation at the moment. Little finger and ring finger on my right hand, my thumb has gone too but I’ve got used to it now so that will wait. They are taking tendons from my wrists. I’m very worried about the recovery time especially as I am right handed. I veer between getting it done and not getting it done from day to day. I need to decide very soon.

For me it really wasn’t a choice I needed to use my hands. Don’t regret it at all. I still don’t have total control over my fingers but it’s. Ether that before. My last tendon pp was total 12 weeks which makes life difficult, to be honest I can’t remember my right hand but obviously I got through it with help. You do need to rely on someone else especially if you’re right handed. Most of my surgeries have made life better but I decided not to have spinal surgery which is managed medically and I’m pleased I went down that way. Surgery isn’t always successful, but with my hands I definitely do it again even though recovery is quite long. In the end it’s your choice.

Thank you for your reply. It’s made more difficult because I am self employed but my fingers don’t affect my work so I’ll have to have a big think and make a final decision. I’m glad you feel yours was worth it.

Ouch sounds so painful. I've had pop and blue painful bruise appear on my fingers and wrists befor after seemingly average things like picking up the kettle or shaking out the washing. Is that a ruptured tendon?

Yes, my right index finger, it’s permanently straight and my consultant said it could do more damage to operate. That was a few years ago. It’s spoiled my handwriting but I find a chunky pen wrap helps give me better grip.
