I have been taking 17.5mg Methetrexate per week and 200mg Hudroxychloroquine per day now for 6 months but over the past month my left eye has started twitching and is getting worse each day.......does anyone else have this problem - is this a side effect of the MTX?

Well blow me down, I too have had eye twitching on and off for a week now and have been on 15 mgs of MTX for 6 weeks now. Was wondering what was causing it but seems it is likely to be the MTX.

Hi, I had this alot before RA and MTX and someone told me it was caused by stress. Didn't look into it further though. Does seem we can put most things down to stress or MTX though!

Stress and tiredness i believe can cause it, perhaps the medications can too but not sure.

I always get twitchy eye lids if I didn't get enough sleep.

I get this quite often and I'm sure now that it is when I'm more stressed than usual. I've had it when I was on MTX, hydroxychloroquine, and again recently when I wasn't (on azothiaprine currently). If i have to push myself to do things when the RA is flaring, it seems more common - and also goes with more frequent cramp as well.

I have problems with my right eye - blurred vision, aches, scleritis, pain when I try to focus and twitching. It is autoimmune related. I'm just on Prednisolone at the moment.

If you are at all worried about your eyes at least get checked by an optician or try to get referred to see an opthamologist, eyes are easily damaged and you only have the two! xxx

Thank you for all your replies.... I don't believe that is stress - I am having the least stressful time at the moment than I have had for a very long time xxx

Hi, Grandy, I'm not sure if this is a side effect of your medication but it is also a sign of lack of potassium or magnesium. When I get this twitching I make sure that I start to eat bananas a bit more often and it usually settles down within a day or so. Of course you could always add it in through a supplement but I am so sick of pills that I try to find another way first, if possible. I hope this helps. Clemmie.
