Hey, I'm thinking of getting the Allen Carr book to help me, I was just wondering if any one else has read it and what do you think?

My daughter-in-law encouraged me to read the book some eighteen months ago. (My son got on well after reading it).

At that time, I could totally see the logic of what he was saying in the book, but I wasn't ready to begin. I was also not impressed by the way he tells you to pity smokers and generally endorses looking down on them. Eight months ago I was a smoker, and a general all round good egg, all at the same time.

Since starting my quit, when I was ready, I have re-read the book. The notion that you are immediately a non-smoker is excellent, but I still dislike his attitude to folks who still smoke.

Hi Jemma

I read the book just over five years ago and have been smoke free ever since.

My sister lend it to me and it sat on a shelf for three years before I picked it up:confused:

What have you got to lose??

Lots of people say he is condesending, but I think he does this for a reason.

You need to get your mind in the right place right at the start.

To be honest I do now pity people who smoke. Once you escape the trap you may too.

I read it Jemma and I found it brilliant! I have just suggested Bang get it to help with his quit. It is worth a read that is for sure. I can send you a copy if you like?

The concepts are sound, the style a little repetitive. Its worth a read.

Hi Jemma

I read it a few years ago and wanted to stop smoking before I finished the book, even though he said not to:rolleyes:

I quit for about 5 weeks then but even now, on my most successful quit I still remember some of the mind change advice in the book.

Definately worth a read, get all the help and motivation available - good luck:D

Just finished it today. Def worth a read. I personally try not to take it too literally as I have quit before reading it as well as using gum, which both are discouraged in the book. In my previous quits this would have provided me with a great excuse to quit my quit until I have finished the book, but not this time.

I do agree about most of it and really liked the repeted message 'you are not giving up anything'. It also helped me with my ultimate fear of never being able to enjoy certain situations as much and always craving a cig when eg having a wine. I now believe that as a non-smoker I can enjoy life more, not less. So thank you Allen!

Has anyone read the staying quit one? Is that one worth a read after the easy way?

Roosa.

Hiya,

I read the book years ago. And quit for a few days after reading it. The quit was so short I don't even classify it as one of my quits. Geez I'm not really selling this here am I! But I would say yes read the book. I liked it because it was a build up to quitting....you still smoke reading the book, up until the end where you smoke your last fag! Similar to the no smoking nhs course I went on...for the first 3 weeks we were all still smoking. And same again this quit...I said for months in advance, told every man and his dog that I was quitting in the new year. I think building up to your quit creates momentum. And by god u need momentum. If you've quit already I'm sure the book would help also, and I too have been thinking or reading it again just to affirm my quit, and hey its another thing to keep me occupied eh! So I'd say yeah go for it. You've nothing to lose and lots to gain.

Best of luck with ur quit

Xxx

i read it and truely believe it contributed to my success

i know i used patches and inhalator to which he doesnt agree with but i ignored those parts in the book as i felt i had to do what was best for me and at that time i needed the patches and inhalator to get me in the right place

but at the end of the day i really think the book clicked a switch for me as i was definately a weak person and dont think i did it all by myself

boo

The Advantages of Being a Smoker page 58 in the book says it all really :)

Hi, I've quit using the book and I know I couldn't have done it without it. It struck a chord with me and I've not smoked since. No patches, no cravings worth mentioning, it really has been easy - just like the book says. I'm still gobsmacked that it worked but I'm so glad it has :-)

Do as much as you can to give yourself the best chance of success :)

Hi, my three year quit was achieved with Allen Carr's book and I'm trying to bag one on Ebay to help me this time, as Tesco says - every little helps!:)

I don't know if I'm supposed to say this, but it is freely (but not sure if legally;)) available as a pdf download - can't remember exactly where but I just googled and found it without too much trouble.

I'm still gobsmacked that it worked but I'm so glad it has :-)

I'll second that! To say I was skeptical before I read it is an understatement - but it totally changes the way you think about smoking. As others have said, it's very dogmatic in advocating the 'cold turkey' to quitting, but whether you agree with that or not there are some very powerful insights to be gained by reading it.

I went to buy this book today but it seems there are a variety of diffetent ones (easyway, ways for women, ways to give up without putting on weight) etc etc! Does anyone know which is the one I should actually buy/read! Many thanks!
