I have been trying to quit for about 4 years. I have been on and off patches most of the time and did manage 8 months once! This time I was going to try Champix but decided I didn't fancy the side effects  so I am staying on patches. I am now on Day 6 and at the moment I am not having too much of a problem, probably because I have been through this numerous times in the last 4 years.
I tend to find I have problems once I come off the patches, when I tend to become irritable . This time I am determined to quit for good!
Hope you don't mind me asking, but what happened to make you relapse after 8 months? It would be helpful to know what to llok out for in the coming months!!
Still good luck and hope this quit is the forever one.
Hi Woody
Welcome, glad to hear you are doing so well.
Hope you don't mind me asking, but what happened to make you relapse after 8 months? It would be helpful to know what to llok out for in the coming months!!

Hi John,
Stupidly, it was my first attempt at quitting that lasted 8 months! After I had come off patches about 4 months in, I tended to get irritable and then I went on a beach holiday and stupidly started smoking again the first day there.
Unfortunately, life has also been stressful over the last few years with family illness, so each time I have caved in its usually stressful moments that do it. Strangely though I also cave in when I go on a beach holiday. This year we have changed and we are off to Austria for a walking holiday, so I am hoping the same thing wont repeat this year.
Last January, I started going to the gym, lost a stone in weight and really enjoyed cycling. The gym got too expensive, winter stopped me cycling and for a few months I have been smoking a couple of cigarettes a day. I was going to try Champix, I even got the prescription, but didn't fancy the side effects, so I am going to stay on patches, even more determined this time to quit for good. Now the better weather is here, I going to get back on the bike as well.
Good luck with your quit. Watch out for the times you are under stress, those were the killer times for me.
I looked up all the methods to help me stop smoking and personally I felt that I could not do the patches or the gum because they are nicotine substitues, I didnt see the point in quitting but still getting nicotine, but everyone is differant arent they.
I am on Champix so hopefully I chose the right one, I am on my 5th day had a couple of bad cravings but so far so good.
