Thanks For The Day 3 Hug

My name is Clare, and I have stopped smoking for 2 days, 22 hours, 50 minutes and 43 seconds and counting, so I guess that is closer to day 3, just 2 hours to go in fact till I have got through day 3 smoking free.

I've not smoked 89 death sticks, and saved £21.43.

I've saved 7 hours and 22 minutes of my life.

I hadnt thought about the time I wasted smoking before, but this little program I downlaoded, the Quit Counter, tells you how much time you have saved, worked out at 7 minutes per cigarette, and I am most shocked that already, had I been smoking I would have wasted over 7 hours of the last 3 days smoking (20ish a day).

Day 3 has been ok, I was slow to get going this mornin, but once I got started I decided to spring clean my kitchen and went a bit crazy, chucking out all the accumulate crap from the back of my cupboards.

As I was doing it I was thinking that this is happening inside me too as all the smoking crap is getting cleaned out my lungs and body. That was quite motivating and tonight I feel really positive.

I had a tough day yesterday, but realised that it was because I was not using the nicotine gum properly, was chewing too much and so not gettin the benefit, today, doing exactly as said on packet has really helped, as long as I dont forget to take the gum, I am not craving much at all it seems.

Also I noticed that although day 1 and 2 waking up was horrible, as my morning ritual was always coffee and cigarettes, I didnt get half so bad a craving this morning, I hope that is something will continue to improve as I break that little ritual.

I have been a bit of a wimp on this quit, doing it very gradually, I spent last few months tryin to break the habits as I just smoked continuously indoors with everything I did, so I first stopped smoking inside and made myself go outside every time I wanted a ciggie. I must have been a pitiful sight in my woollie hat and scarf at 8 am with cofee in hand. But it did help break my habit of smoking with everything I do.

Then I managed to stop smoking 3 days ago and am taking gum instead and it is easier than previous attempts I have made, just because I am used to not smoking inside already, so a bit of the associations were busted before I started the quit.

I feel so pleased with myself that I have gone 3 days, because last year I had about 10 quits that I tried but could never manage the first day.

I am confident that with the three days behind me that is a big motivation to coninue, as I never want to go thorugh the first few days again.

Anyway good luck to anyone else quitting and good health!

Oh and I will just tell one little thing that has helped me last few days, I read someone else saying that when they quit smoking, they imagined they were on a desert island and couldnt get any cigs if they wanted too, and imagining that was kind of a nice day dream that eased thing a bit for me. Hard to do when living by a busy main road, but havin been a smoker for 25 years, I am very good at deluding myself ;)

Hi Clare,

I woke up this morning and couldn't believe it was day 4 without the horrid things - like you I find it hard in the mornings breakfast was coffee and cig still miss this ritual and wake up a bit sad in mornings when I realise there will be no cig but once I'm up and busy I soon forget I just keep thinking of other little treats I can afford to give myself - my other half is laughing at me the house has never been so clean.

Keep strong.

Thanks so much for the hug. How nice of you to do that. I needed one.

I'm so happy to report that Day 3 for me - cold turkey, mind you...has been almost a breeze for me. I woke up early and exercised this morning. I've been either on the phone or on my computer the rest of the day. Hardly any cravings at all today. Thank goodness.
