Hi Joe,

Well done getting to day 2 :D I would think that the gum would prolong the cravings because your body is still taking in nicotine. You will crave the nicotine as well as the habit while using the gum. If you quit cold turkey you only crave the habit after 72 hours when the nicotine has left your body. I don't know forsure though

I dunno

Dude, I dunno anything about chewing the gum n all that - but whatever it does - it's gotta be better than smoking, man !

Well done on your quit !! Be strong and whether you find the gum works for you or not - keep telling yourself that you don't smoke and that you hate it etc. Every time I see someone smoke, I tell myself that I feel sick. After a while, you really do feel sick.

My favourite "quit" assistance memory - is from Manchester airport smoking room. You can barely see the opposite side of the small room - and when you come out, you retch for about 15 mins. Then you have to wander into duty free to find some tester pot of aftershave to hide the fact that you absolutely stink !!!

Good work fella. Stick with it. You can do it!

:D

Max -Gatwick was even worse. There was this little area inthe MIDDLE of international departures(complete with fans, air purifiers and the like) and everyone and I mean EVERYONE could look at you having your last cig b4 your flight. Talk about being an exhibit in a Zoo,now I know what the animals feel like!

I'd have to agree with NS4M, the sooner you get rid of nicotine - even in chewing gums - the better! At least in my personal experience, not having nicotine in my system any more after just 3 days helped me living my quit like something extremely positive. It made me feel free :p :)

Joe,

I've quit cold turkey this time, though in the past I've stopped for long periods using the nrt chewing gum. In my experience it doesn't make any difference to the length of time to kick the habit overall. I think if there is a difference it's that when I went down from the 4mg gum to the 2mg I had a few shakey days and again when I kicked the gum altogether. In fact I had to go onto regular sugar free gum for a while rather than just stop chewing one day.

Either way don't be too bothered about the chosen method so long as it's working for you as you get no medals making it difficult and tripping up.

One of the great things of quitting is not feeling the need to escape from the offices to have a cigarette, going to the smoke hut (1/3 enclosed bus shelter esp made for smoking but all clear & see though) and working on a Chemical site with all the riggers/fitters/scaffolders etc nosing in and gawping, with mates shouting "waiting for a bus?" for the 100th time!

Its great not to smell of smoke and cuddle my litttle one without breathing awful fumes on her - Shes worth it and keeps me going but I know I still have to do if for myself first.

Good luck all

Joe,

You do whatever you need to do to get thru each craving. If that means gum then by all means gum. Anything is better than smoking. Don't forget to drink lots and lots of water. Add what u need to to drink it but plain or with lemon works the best. My son has quit with large quanities of lemonade. 3 weeks now cold turkey. Little bugger didn't even tell me until last nite! Good luck, stay strong

I know nosmoke, I was shocked when he told me. He hid from me he was smoking for 3 years. I am glad he has stopped so young. I hope the health scares I have had from smoking heavy all these years has scared him enuff that he keeps it up. He's a determined guy. I am giving him lots of encouragement but try not to overdo...you know how they are.
