Hi. I had crazy itching but it was in my private area during a time frame when a kidney stone was moving down low. But no itching anyplace else.

Thanks guys for all of your replies! So is it because of the kidneys not getting rid of stuff? It's a strange old one! I know when your liver isn't functioning well then people get itciness with jaundice so maybe it's similar?

Itching is caused from high phosphorus in the blood.

I am at stage 5 CKD and get itchy a lot. Mainly on my legs and normally at night. I find that if I have cheese or dairy then it tends to make it worse so I try to not have them and it is then not too bad. Hope you can get control of it as I appreciate how uncomfortable it is.

Hello madonbrew and rabbit01, The itching could be more complex than having CKD as it can often be caused by what is eaten or drunk (as rabbit01 finds with dairy foods) or something one uses on one's skin or takes as medicine etc. I have always had sensitive skin as do various members of my family, and I tend to use the same unperfumed products all the time, plus gloves when washing up. I take every precaution to avoid the problem but find since I've been on a kidney friendly diet (with low potassium foods in my case) its largely under control, although on very hot days (pretty rare in the UK) my own perspiration causes itching!

Try mentioning it to your doctor, and also if you have a friendly pharmacy they will probably be able to help you - good luck - Curleytop1.

My leg itching is caused by recently diagnosed lymphedema. I read that CKD, which I have, can be a cause of lymphedema. I am undertreatment for lymphedema. I had a consultation with a renal dietician and follow a renal diet.

I was recently diagnosed with stage 3A,,age 69 and was experiencing night time itching,,drove me crazy. Asked for a phosphate test and came back normal. I researched extensively and found out low levels of vitamin D in conjunction with low Vit B12 can cause this. Asked for those tests. Yes, came back below normal. I started taking a high quality D3 spray in the morning and Vit B12 early with a meal and my itching has gone!! I also gave up all meat and poultry, diary and all junk food. Go back in 3 months to see results. Creatinine was 1.10 and GFR 47. Also on a small dose( 1/4 tsp) of high quality baking soda and lemon in warm water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Check my urine with pH strips and maintain 7.5. which is good. My dr. acted like no problem, at your age this is normal. NO! Disease is not normal, health is normal. Diet and activity is the key.
