I also had a lot of hair loss after my transplant. I was concerned I was going to go bald. It seemed at about 9 months it started to slow down. My hairdresser says I have a lot of new hair coming in now. I am just at 1 year post transplant. I did try some special shampoos, but I would say don’t waste your money, I don’t think they helped. I think you just need to wait it out. It does get better.
Same as Pjpanning...I too had hair loss ans it was a bit concerning to pull out so much from my brush daily, but it did seem to die down. I did try a gentle shampoo, but it didn't seem to matter at the time. How recent was the transplant.? Hang in there.
I agree with the other two responders. I had hair loss and tried many different shampoos but none worked. It got better over time, although my hair changed overall—now curlier and finer. Actually, I like it better than before.
I really don’t think there is anything topical that can really regrow hair, but you can avoid harsh chemicals (perms, hair color, relaxers and stripping shampoos) to help protect the hair you have.
Unfortunately, Tacrolimus (Envarsus) really does cause quite a bit of hair loss. I’m 2.5 years post transplant. I lost more than half of my hair. Right now, I’m in the middle of transitioning off from Envarsus to Belatacept. My side effects on Envarsus (horrible brain fog, hand tremors and hair loss) were starting to bother me. My Nephrologist thought I might do well on Belatacept. Right now, I’m on 2mg of day Envarsus. I should be totally off Envarsus by December.
Aside from using gentle shampoos and possibly different immune suppressant meds, eating a healthy diet with protein, vitamins and minerals is probably the best thing you can do.
I’m sorry you are having to go through this.
I had significant hair loss starting about three months post transplant and continuing for about another nine months, tapering off. During that time I used a generic brand of Rogaine (Equate) in the liquid form following package directions, as suggested by my transplant team. I believe it slowed down the loss and also promoted a bit of hair growth. However most of the new hair was fine textured and didn't persist after I stopped the product. Also was gentle when shampooing. It might be worth getting a shampoo without sulfate, possibly available at a natural food store or farmers market. I'm at three years post transplant and hair on my temples is still thin but the rest is fairly normal. I think different people have different contributing factors. I was age 65 for my transplant. Best wishes, hoping it slows down soon for you.
