I have a sign on my car that reads "Kidney Needed" with my email address. My husband has been driving my car and a worker at a driver through contacted me saying she wants to donate to me 😮.
I am currently inactive on the list but working to get back active. I have an appt with the transplant team on Mar 6th to see if I can get reactivated. Do I have to be active to get her kidney? What if I get reactivated and get a call for a deceased kidney before her being tested and passing? I've never been this close to possibly getting a transplant and I'm a bit anxious. The waiting game just got a little more real.

Having a live donor trumps everything....no pun intended. I was told if I got a live donor, I would not have to worry so much about BMI and that they would use robotic surgery which is less invasive. Run, do not walk, to the transplant team ( call them) and tell them you have a live donor. They will test her asap and man, if she passes, what a dream come true. Also remember, if she is not a match for you to get into pair exchange program which will also expedite your situation. I wish you with all my heart the best of luck
No one there since it's the weekend but I did email them Friday night. I have to get back Active and my appt with them is Mar 6th so nothing I can do but keep walking and praying it all works out.
I was in hospital for 2 months in Aug and Sept 2023 after PD failed. It's been a struggle since then. I had to do PT, then I had to get a stent. Right now I'm trying to figure out why my hemoglobin is low so I'll be doing an endoscopy on Mar 11. It's just been one thing after another.
as long as your health is good they would put you back to active it has to be safe for you to have a transplant . But I hope this donor is doing the testing to see if they are clear to do the transplant . Hopefully they will pass with flying colors and if they don’t match have you ask them if they are willing to do a pair exchange I would get everything in the works I knew if that happen to me they would say I have to wait because my ejection fraction still low but it would be a wonderful thing to have a live donor . And you have to decide if you got a call from a deceased donor if you would take that I can understand the worry what if the live donor doesn’t match did I give up a chance to get a deceased kidney waiting on the test from the live donor that why I would talk to them ask them if they would do a pair exchange if they said yes it doesn’t matter if they match you cause your team will look for a match for you . I really hope you get back to active prayers lifted for you .
She said she really, really wants to help and she's 0- so universal donor. I'll not get my hopes up too high. My brother tried and found he was prediabetic so no go. He was more upset than me. If it doesn't work out I talked to some people who have been on dialysis 10+ years so there's that. Hemo seems to agree with me.
You should do all you can to get back to active anyway, because you never know when the donor kidney will show up. Your potential donor will go through a more thorough set of testing than you, to make sure that they see nothing going on that would have the donor not thrive on only one kidney. The goal is to have two healthy people after the transplant.
I got a living donor kidney 6 years ago, from the pastor of my church. I have PKD and was close to needing dialysis. In 4 days after the transplant, 20 years of negative effects went away. It was everything that the transplant center said about a living donor transplant. We are both doing well. Good luck with your adventure.
My husband‘s nephew offered to get tested to be my donor when I was inactive due to a lung nodule on a scan. I saw a pulmonologist on my own who reread the scans and determine that the radiologist had misread some things, and the nodule was in fact stable. They reactivated me shortly after that. I was advised to stay on the deceased donor list at the same time that my nephew tested. He never even stirred the process because I got the call for my deceased kidney. So far that’s worked really well for me and I have to say I was a bit relieved that my nephew did not have to go through donation for me.
Oh wow! Go for it! Angels walk amongst us. I hope your volunteer passes all the tests, that you pass your tests, and that it happens! As others have said, the cleared donor can still donate her kidney to someone else giving you priority status when you're cleared. Or both of you can wait. Sending many prayers and encouragement your way.
