What a shit show, 8 months into transplant just tested positive for jc virus.i think it is because my transplant team switched me off antirejection protocols of tacro, mmf, and pred and transitioning to belatacet (tacro was killing my kidney)but still keeping me on tacro and weaning me off over last 2 months and i wonder if that put my immune systems so low i contracted the jc virus as was negative up until last thursday, anyone else test positive for it?
Jc virus: What a shit show, 8 months into... - Kidney Transplant
Jc virus
Sorry to hear you have the jc virus. I'm fighting a losing battle with the BK virus.
No matter the immunosuppressant you are on, they all affect your immune system at first. I think after awhile your body adjusts. I am 23+ years post transplant. The first year I had CMV. I had never had it and my kidney donor did.
It's actually the other way around - the higher the levels of immunosuppressants in your body, the likelihood of catching viruses of any sort increases. Since tac was killing your new kidney, they're switching to another immunosuppressant protocol. That's justifiable. The addition of new suppressants while still on tac has probably squashed your immune defenses, letting the JC virus to replicate and make itself visible. Overtime, as the transition moves along, and tac is eliminated and others are reduced, things will likely turn things around for you. It's a delicate balancing act. Patience and trust is the best one can do. I suspect they'll turn your situation around soon.
