Stent removal Pain?

I get my stent removed next week.

I read that after the stent between the kidney and bladder is removed, the actual removal is only around 1 minute. One gal said her pain was horrible and lasted over 4 hours afterwards. Has anyone else experienced this, or have you been told by the doc to take anything for the pain?

I am wondering if it is really that bad, or if she just had a weird case. Thanks.

My stent removal was quick and painless. Worst part was the doc running about an hour behind. They kept me in recovery until I could pee without a problem, which was no issue. Should be straight forward. Good luck and congratulations on your new kidney.

I never felt a thing. Watched him remove it in the monitor.

Mine was uncomfortable and hurt for a few seconds during the removal. Some burning when urinating a couple of hours after. Not too bad. I was relieved to get it removed as it meant I was further on the road to recovery. Happy for you getting your new kidney and wish you the best!

We heard stories from women that it was worse pain than giving a baby, the doctors said otherwise. At this point my boyfriend didn’t wanted to feel pain so he paid for anasthesia. I think it’s a matter of pain tolarence. He admits he has very low tolarence and it was a pain he could avoid.Good luck with the procedure!

Completely painless (I had no anesthesia) and took a few seconds.

Same for me. The anticipation was the worst part. Over in seconds and no pain. Congratulations on your kidney!

I was dreading this, it took 10-15 minutes for me but I felt no pain at all during of after. Some stents are magnetised and are very quick to remove mine wasn’t .

Best of luck

I had mine taken out when they removed my PD catheter, so I was under general anesthesia. No pain when I urinated, but I did urinate a little tiny bit of blood for a day. No cramping or discomfort. Unfortunately, I can’t speak to the actual procedure - I was out cold.

I was a bit nervous anticipating the removal of the stent. Fortunately, after my transplant I asked my surgeon had long before the stent will be removed. I was told that because I had a living donor no stent was needed. My kidney started making urine as soon as they connected it.

I have had a couple of cystoscopes in the past and while uncomfortable pretty much painless.

I was doing home hemodialysis at home and after sticking those needles in my arm a cystoscopy is a walk in the park.

The fear is worst than the reality.

Good luck to you.

Congrats on your transplant!! The stent removal is nothing to worry about. It is quick and painless.

My removal was quick and painless and was exactly as I expected it to be based on what I was told in my classes. Specifically, they said it would be no big deal and in fact it really was no big deal. However, they did say it is “uncomfortable” for men. Good luck and try not to worry.

My stent removal took a bit longer than a minute- they had some issues and the pain really did last for hours after and was up there as the worst pain I've had (digging around inside the urethra was always going to be painful though. I think I'm probably an exception to the rule though and I know other women who had transplants and had no pain so don't worry too much about it. Peeing after is the worst part- bit stingy and burny for the rest of the day. Totally worth the new kidney though.

I had anesthesia because they were doing something else as well. As far as the stent goes, I don’t remember any discomfort afterwards.

It was quick & easy for me. I'd heard from others it was painful, so the anticipation was worst part. I think it may be worse for men. But not sure as I've not known any men with transplants. Experiences differ. I hope yours is like mine- easy!

Thanks everyone! I go in tomorrow. I still might carry some Tylenol with me, just in case. :) My drive home will be 2 hours without traffic, at least the way my husband drives.

You could ask for an Ativan or a pain med if you get very nervous. Good luck!

My spouse had the stent and the dr allowed me with him when they removed it outpatient. My husband said it was uncomfortable a very short time and not issues afterwards.

I had stent removals two times one was mild discomfort and second one I did have bleeding and pain for a whole day bad experience for me second time around. The first one not related to transplant had to have a ureter reconstruction. Doctor gave me Tylenol and some other pain medication no anesthesia fast procedure and just mild discomfort when it was pulled out. After the transplant stent removal I forgot my Tylenol and doctor did not provide any. No anesthesia and it was very painful not what I was expecting. I had cramping and bleeding for a whole day stopped by next morning the urologist told me all this would happen and was normal, but like everyone says it’s usually painless there are the unlucky few (like my second experience) that have the bad experiences.

My result - I'd call it discomfort for less than a minute. You might call it pain, but not compared to transplant recovery. No residual pain. Everyone, thanks for your support!

Well, BabyTee, how was it? I didn't think it hurt at all. I also think that the urologist got a lot of money for just removing a stent! LOL
