Has anyone here had experience with transplant eligibility issues due to coronary calcification? Thanks so much.

I think that is a question for your nephrologist and the transplant docs where you are listed. I don't have any heart issues so would have no idea if it would effect your eligibility.I had my transplant on October 15, 1999 - so soon will be my 22nd transplant anniversary!

Best of luck to you! Ask the question to your team...

Hi OceanBreezes. When my husband (with ESRD) and I went to see our local transplant center, coronary calcification was indeed mentioned as a problem for eligibility. Apparently when there is too much calcification in the veins and arteries, particularly in the transplant region, it prevents a successful outcome. He specifically pointed out the veins and arteries involved on a chart. The doctor then stated that he was pleased that my hubby was interested in going on peritoneal dialysis, not hemodialysis, as that was easier on the vascular system since no blood was involved. Thankfully, my hubby received a transplant this past June at age 71. Interesting note: transplants may be harder on the cardiac system of older folks anyway, as my hubby went into a-fib about a week post surgery. And I wonder if hubby already had some coronary calcification leading to this? Apparently it's not unusual for those with kidney failure to have some calcification - I think it's the extent of it that matters.. Hope this little bit of information helps fill in the picture for you.
