Hyperparathyroidism

Has anyone had a parathyroidectomy? I had one a week ago. Just looking to see what other people's experience has been.

I haven't yet, but my endocrinologist has been watching my PTH and I've had lots of tests and imaging and seen the surgeon (who says wait). Would be very interested to know how you're get on after the surgery, what it was like, etc. Good luck and take care.

I had one before, and all i can recommend is make sure you take your calcium. Hungry bone syndrome is real. I let my calcium get too low and ended up having a seizure at work fel and busted my head. I had to stay in the hospital after the parathyroidectomy because it took forever to get my calcium normal again.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm feeling really good. Maybe even more energetic and the scale is finally moving! My neck is sore and I have a golf ball size swelling. Even after 11 days. Hopefully that goes away.

I went to Norman Parathyroid Clinic in Tampa....Removed 3 tumors and left me with one happy one...its been almost 6 years and not one problem...These Docs know their stuff !!

I had mine done by Dr Politz at Tampa General. People come from all over the United States to see him. I'm so lucky he is at my hospital

Yes...they are so wonderful...top notch center...You should contact them and ask about your concerns and swelling in your neck...Mine never did that

I was supposed to have one and went through the process of testing but then I got the call for the kidney transplant. My nephrologist put me on cinacalcet which has my parathyroid in the normal numbers.

I was on that too. It makes the numbers look better but doesn't cure the problem. My team said if I still needed the cinacalet 6 months after transplant then I need to have the surgery. My parathyroids were very large when they took them out. Very common in patients with chronic kidney disease.
