Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease in the U.S., so if you have diabetes you can not donate a kidney and pre-diabetes may also be a barrier. If you are interested you can contact a transplant center to inquire further and discuss your specific health conditions.

Thank you, I had a friend she was a match but they said she was prediabtic so they said no to transplant. Just disappointed trying to wrap my head around it.

I'm sorry to hear that. Because diabetes causes kidney disease, they don't want to put her at any additional risk.

Hi, my sister was a match but didn't pass the physical because of pre-diabetes and slightly elevated blood pressure. I had four family/friends that were matches but for different reasons, didn't proceed. It can be very frustrating and stressful. I ended up getting a deceased donor in June of 2016 and feel great. Good luck to you.

Thank you it sure took the wind out of my sail! But I'm a positive person and God will provide! Thanks for the support we all need this.

My mum was told she was prediabetic and within 6months she turned it around and now not prediabetic and figures are in normal range. She did this by changing her diet so maybe your friend could do the same and still be your donor.

If your friend improved her diet she would be improving her health and giving your the greatest gift as well. Win Win all round.

Thank you I will talk with her she. Has been trying to eat healthy since January has lost about 20 pounds she said she feels better.

That's amazing she has lost 20lbs. Definitely talk to her as she may be surprised and not be prediabetic any longer, and then can continue with the other tests required to be a live donor. My mum turned things around within 4 months. Although it didn't work out for us as she was found to have a scarred kidney, she as got rid of the risk of diabetics.
