Hi, I am 78 yo on in center HD for 6 months. My RBC is low and my PTH is high. How do I improve on these two with meds and or diet. My nephro and head nurse ( in center) are not very enthusiastic about it. Can anyone help me resolve this issue? Thanks

RBC AND PTH improvement
You need to speak with your nephrologist because there are definitely meds to help with both issues. Check on your labs to see how your iron is doing. There are OTC drugs to raise that but never take anything without direction from the doc. There are also infusions, shots and other prescription meds to help with anemia, (low RBC, hemocrit and hemoglobin) which is quite common in CKD. The PTH is linked also to calcium depletion, and they should be concerned about that. There is a couple of meds for that as well. Check your Vit d and your phosphorous levels because they are all connected. Here is something I found
Cinacalcet and vitamin D analogs (prescription forms of vitamin D) are used to manage secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease. These medications help keep the balance of calcium and phosphorus minerals so that the parathyroid glands don't have to work hard. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
