I attended a Zoom meeting sponsored by a Transplant Surgeon from my Transplant Hospital at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta GA.
The meeting is a PowerPoint presentation about kidney Allocation, donations, great resources, and very eye-opening info about how the Transplant Facilities determine viability of matching a kidney to (deceased or live donation) to the patient needing the kidney.
I'm not positive how to attach the 55+ minute MP4 to this forum so that you guys on the Wait List will understand how the organ allocation is handled by the Transplant Facility.
Any suggestions will be appreciated on how to upload the file. I will try with what technical ability I have, but I have a new phone (Moto 5G) plus I do not know if there is a size limitation on this site for uploads by users. If a MODERATOR of this site/forum will allow me to forward the file via email and they can upload it to this site, please reply or reach out to me.
One IMPORTANT allocation component I learned about is "know your transplant facility's assigned 'PRA' for your chances in receiving a deceased's kidney". It is an algorithm applied based on age, cause of kidney failure, HLA results, antibodies, etc. I gathered from the surgeon (and some add'l research) that the LOWER your PRA is, the better the chances the transplantee will have of a successful (and faster?) Transplant. Do your own research of this information, but know that your Transplant Coordinator and your database with the Transplant Facility has your number and you can ask for it. BTW: I learned from my Hospital Social Worker that my PRA is 72. A bit depressing.
[It appears I can only "Add a Photo", not a large .MP4 file, so I will need to have a moderator get in touch with me to get the file or individuals can reply to me and provide their email addresses. This is VERY good information that the Zoom attendees never learned directly from a doctor on the front lines of transplant allocation.]
Happy Thanksgiving to all!!! 🦃
