Weight gain: I am need of help with... - Kidney Dialysis
Weight gain
Firstly sorry I to hear that. As someone who has been overweight since I was about 8 years old then I know what a problem it can be. Do you know why you have gained weight? Is it that you are less active? Are you doing peritoneal dialysis and absorbing the dextrose in the dialysis fluid. Perhaps you have an under active thyroid? Are you eating too much? Weight gain is a symptom but you really need to identify the cause and work on that. My advice would be to talk to your doctor. If you are under a renal clinic then you should have access to a renal dietician who can help you with identifying foods which are safe and nutritious.
Yes im on peritoneal dialysis so lots of calories in the fluid alone.Im trying to keep active but had a stroke awhile back effected my balance. As far as diet i eat very little actually cause with my pd program i keep 1950ml fluid in me all day so no room for alot. But thanks for the advice i can use all i can get
I am on PD too. I do manuals. I never get a positive UF with the yellow bags. I am a fast transporter so I start absorbing the fluid after about 2.5 hours. I have put on about 5 KGs since starting 18 months ago. I hardly eat anything as my appetite is not good and as I say I absorb so much sugar from the fluid. I have tried to discuss it with the renal clinic and they just shrug their shoulders. Well good luck. I know how difficult it is.
Yes it is very difficult and frustrating i feel im eating nothing and gaining.i could literally look at a Hershey kiss and gain 10lbs. Im currently using cycler at night.and feel same everyone looks at you with no help and says good luck
I have a recumbent elliptical machine. No matter how low my BP goes and how dizzy I may be, I’m able to do workouts on this recumbent device. Maybe something like that would work for you to keep some exercise going??? I visited a fitness place that sells a variety of home exercise equipment options. I asked for an appointment with someone with specialization related to exercise options for seniors with serious chronic health conditions. I was referred to this place by a faculty member at my university who studies this area ... One of his former masters students worked at that store. I was so pleased to find that I could still use an elliptical machine. I just needed a recumbent machine due to my low and sudden plummeting BP.

Have you had your thyroid function checked out? Thyroid problems go hand in hand with kidney issues yet not many doctors bother checking the thyroid. Google thyroid and kidney and you will see. You are probably having regular blood tests anyway so see if they can check your thyroid function next time. A friend of mine was telling me about a man who lost 45 lbs in weight once they had corrected he thyroid inbalance through medication.
To Nurse Red, Gaining that much weight no matter the cause is significant and I am sure you know that. I too am a person of size and hearing your story concerns me greatly. I am not on dialysis yet and would probably us PD when the time comes. I have been massively struggling to lose weight to keep off dialysis. My journey has taken me to, so far, five different doctors who have said to my face they cannot help me. I can't take drugs. One did not do weight management for obese...really who do you help? One was a hospital program who said I would gain weight on their program and it is not set up for renal diets. I am looking into bariatric surgery next but that is my last choice and probably won't because I do not believe in body mutilation for weight loss. But I am going to go to the appointment to listen to what they say.
Two places recommended something called Functional Medicine where they look for the root cause of why a person gains weight. They look at diet, exercise and lifestyle while also looking into biometobolic reasons why they body is not working correctly. I am hoping this will be the answer to my plight. I have an appointment for this doctor in 2 weeks. However, they are costly as they do not take insurance.
I understand your situation and how frustrating it is. Keep searching for the answers because something is wrong for you.
I also recommend that you keep a food journal and track the foods you are eating daily. I discovered that one issue I was having was I was not eating food that was nutritionally good for me and not enough. Every person is different on how they burn food. The next step is to see a dietician who specializes in renal diets so they can set up a meal plan for you. I would also question the PD to see if there is a better dialysis for you that is not going to make you gain weight. Are you diabetic? Is the glucose affecting you? Keep asking.
Yes the pd has sugar in it so theres calories there and i am diabetic so fighting sugar levels with insulin
so you are in a viscous circle because you need to use insulin and insulin makes you gain weight. Does your healthcare team have any ideas. I can bet it is not just what you are eating.
Spoke to my dietitian today and she looked up how many calories in 2.5 solution with 6 cycles its 1800 to 1900 calories alone then if i eat im doomed
Does that mean you are absorbing that many calories from PD? Or is that how much is in the solution.
Yes, I had seen that when researching this online. How much of that are you actually absorbing daily? I had hoped that some of it leaves your body with the waste fluid but have no idea if that’s true or not. I may have to have them give me the nutrients I need daily in my PD solution and just give up eating entirely to keep from gaining weight! Ugh
I’ve done some additional reading about glucose absorption associated with PD dialysis. Please see the link below. It does sound as though we don’t absorb all the glucose in the solution. But there are recommendations for dietary changes to account for the glucose we absorb from the solution.

Have you asked about extraneal You don't absorb it. They don't like to give it because it's more expensive and not everyone can use it. But if you could it might help. After six years on PD my mother went on hemo and lost a lot of weight then.
My husband’s renal dietitian gave us some great tips. My husband has been able to loose weight for getting a BMI of 32 for a kidney transplant. The trick is not to combine the sugar of the fruit with carbs in the morning and do not get carbs at night. If you are not in dialysis yet works the same, the only thing you have to do is get more veggies to avoid higher levels of creatinine. You’ll get there. Keep a record of what you eat and see an Endocrinologist.
