I am. 74 yr old female with decreasing g GFR 36 from 45 of 4 yrs ago) even though I eat a kidney friendly diet and drink lots of tap water and exercise ( I am 5’5”. 121 lbs ) ”I am trying to figure out if anyone knows the accuracy of the health affects of hydrogen water on renal function. It is hyped online and my nephrologist said it would be ok!…. Anyone have experience or more knowledge about the good affects of hydrogen water. You buy a special bottle that somehow adds this into the water from your tap

hydrogen water
I looked this up as I thought it was a joke and there really is hydrogen water and tablets. The things it promises to do was interesting. I am going to investigate this further. The only thing I saw in my short look was sometimes they add potassium and magnesium in the product, and you do not need that with renal disease. Thanks for bringing this up to us.
I also was diagnosed with CKD. Sounds like you're on right track with a kidney friendly diet. As far as hydrogen water, I think asking your Dr. would be a good place to start.Regarding a helpful diet, I follow a kidney diet called PRAL. Basically, it's which types/groups of foods are easiest/hardest for your kidneys to process. The majority of foods eaten should come from the base group. The picture is just a very small sampling of foods in each group.
I've been following the PRAL principals for about 5 years. During that time my eGFR went up dramatically (over 20 points). I also now exercise regularly.
Read all you can and educate yourself about CKD and diet. You might also want to consult a kidney dietician.
PS if you mean Portland OR, I was born and raised in Vancouver
Quick reply: I suggest the hydrogen water is much hyped 'snakeoil' nonsense.
[Edit:
Hydrogen has very limited solubility in water *at increased pressure*
Go to drink it and that hydrogen will exit the water rapidly.
All the studies fail to describe measuring the total dissolved hydrogen. Instead, they're studying for placebo effect, nothing more.
Bottles of supposed hydrogen water selling fir $90 !? 😳
It's a highly profitable scam.]
My kidneys strongly dislike oxalates - highest sources are almonds and spinach, and this is all about total intake in my case.
There is still testing to be done however current clinical trials do suggest hydrogen water can reduce inflammatory markers which is a driving force in CKD progression from stage 3 on. The studies implicate using this water to balance metabolically, however the increase in acid can pose a risk to a CKD patient in a later stage. Overall, the studies haven't used CKD patients thus far so it is unclear how much benefit this would do for a CKD patient since the sampling size is from non-ckd patients.
Depending on your overall health, with the current studies out there, there isn't a lot of support that it will benefit someone who doesn't have metabolic acidosis BUT there are also no evidence of it doing any harm to renal function either in controlled dosages.
I'd personally avoid it until more studies are done but since your Nephrologist gave you the okay I would start with slowly introducing hydrogen water to your system and monitor your electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium).
My Nephrologist said he couldn't advice to take or avoid and said he wants to wait for more research.
If these simple but “revolutionary cures” propounded by the snake oil salesmen pushing them really worked don’t you think a doctor or long suffering patient would have told you? Wouldn’t that “cure” be touted by some fact talking HACK online…if they really worked why would the nephrologist association say there is no cure…cast conspiracy to kill the CKD population…don’t listen to such garbage for the most part but some can be dangerous! Some of these snake oil pushers do cause deaths with their profit-driven fibs…as always…BUYER BEWARE! IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS…two of the first lesson my parent taught me are perhaps more valuable in their wisdom today!
