Water Retention

I'm new to this at stage three but I have a 13 pound weight gain in a month and my legs and abdomen are swollen and very puffiy. The nephrologist I had didn't think it was my kidneys, but put me lasix. He sent me to a cardiologist to see if it was my heart, it isn't, but the cardiologist said not to take the water pills as they were hard on my kidneys..So here I sit still full of fluid with no suggestions..I understand you cant diagnosis but would appreciate some suggestions.

Just a guess, because I've been through this about two years ago. Have you asked for a vein mapping of your legs? I had a similar situation but not to the degree you are seeing. They did the mapping and I had a vein ablation and then had to wear compression stockings for some time and the problem was solved. Just a guess.

Hi beam,

You do not say what stage you are. Diuretics can be harmful to the kidneys, and I am sure the doctor was trying to resolve the edema. My husband was stage 3 b and has edema issues and they put him on a different diuretic for a while. He was on lasix and they took him off of it. Sorry, not sure what he is on but the edema was from circulation issues not the CKD. He improved his stage 3b from the right drugs.

Sometimes other meds can cause that issue. I was put on a BP med once that blew me up like a balloon. It was so bad and so quick I was amazed. Of course I stopped it.

I know this sounds weird, but are you drinking water? I was told that it can help with bloating. Also more movement helps the body to flush out the extra water. But since I do not know your medical history.... I would ask the doctor if you need to drink more or less.

Thanks, love the name..I'm at stage 3 and that's great advice. I'm seeing my nurse practiioner today and put it all before her. Every doc I see has a different answer..

I was on a BP med that caused my body to retain fluid.

Maybe a second opinion is worth a try. My nephrologist changed my BP med and things improved. There are BP meds that have diuretics in them as part of the way they work

When my CKD progressed, my nephrologist had me on Lasix every other day

In the meantime as you are figuring out medication, etc. maybe make an appointment with a massage therapist who has experience with lymphatic drainage for fluid retention.
