I am 86. Gefr low 30s to low 40s for 2 years since diagnosed. I have a good Nephrologist and Primary. I am about 40 lbs overweight. I avoid red meat and stay plant based most of the time.
I have heard that OZEMPIC OR WEGOVY for weight loss might aslo be good for kidneys. I will discuss with my NEPH on next appointment.
Does anyone have experiences with these weight loss drugs and CKD.

I am on the lowest dose of Ozempic. I am stage five, home hemo. I take such a low dose because my A1c went from over 6 to 4.8. My husband, who is very diabetic is on it also. His kidney disease improved drastically. He takes a low dose of .5. My step daughter is on the largest dose, 2. It stabilized her CKD and improved her diabetes. She, however, has not loss a pound and she drastically needs to. I am the only one who had a reaction to a larger dose. But since we lowered it, I have not had any issues.
May I as about the side effect of diarrhoea? A friend of mine is taking Trulicity and has terrible attacks of diarrhoea without warning. Is this something you’ve had to deal with?
Thanks for your reply. It seems that it's back to everyone responds differently. I’d have to see for myself, but it appears it really works which is hopeful.
I turn 62 later this month. I have ckd from long term dehydration. I lost my colon at 30. I was 224 and the transplant program required weight loss before listing me. There is NO medical evidence that I would waste s kidney, but discrimination is real. I was on ozempic/wegovy for around 2 years and got belowv200, but quickly plateaued. I switched to mournjaro, whis has a different ingredient and I am now 153. I weigh less than I have since I was 13. I eat once a day. I try to stay below 800 calories. As a geneticly Fat, post menopausal woman it has been very difficult. I go to the ymca 4 or 5 times a week for 2-3 hours. The drugs made weight loss possible, but it is still very hard work. My gfr improveimproved. My nephrolgist saysays since I'm smaller, there is less blood to filter. Less work for my kidneys. After a low of 7, my egfr is 26 now.
Hi, I am not aware of Ozempic but heard that it helps. My husband has CKD 4th stage. He was also overweight but after he became vegan fully he drastically reduced his weight. He has plant based diet - no dairy, no meat, no processed foods etc. He has lost weight but is active. Now I want him to gain weight and have more of proteins. But he says in order to reverse kidney disease its better to avoid protein rich foods.
I dont believe that CKD can be sustainably reversed but it can be managed and nutrition and lifestyle is key. We have managed my mum's CKD using Nutritional Therapy only (drug-free) and she remains at stage 3 after 14y 🤞🤞
No personal experience but Ive read plenty about them. For every medical intervention including prescription drugs, it is sensible to assess both risks and benefits, using independent scientific evidence.
I have done this for GLP1 drugs including those youve mentioned.
This is from my own personal experince. When I was on dialysis, my nephrologist told me my transplant center did not approve of the use of diabetes drugs if not diabetic. Yes, I am aware wegovy is now given the OK for weight loss. I now have a transplant. He told me some of his transplant patients take wegovy and tirzepatide, I had ozempic in my fridge for over a year, but was afraid of side effects and finally pitched it when it expired. I have GERD and the endocrinologist who prescribed it told me it might make my reflux worse, among other things. I now have tirzepatide. It’s been in my fridge for 3 months. One of these days I will try it.
I have heard Farxiga, the same class of drug as Ozempic, advertised as actually reversing CKD, at least a little. My ex-husband, who doesn't have CKD, was prescribed Ozempic but could only tolerate it for 3 weeks. He has lost a lot of weight though.
(I personally am on a strict plant-based diet and my eGFR seems to have gone from stage 4 to normal, though I seriously doubt this because my "osmality" and many other blood values are abnormally low on blood tests, and I too have heard that eGFR never goes up)
