Hello, I have Type 2 diabetes and ckd. I may have to have a toe amputated due to the diabetes. What does surgery do to kidney function? Does it make it go down. Last gfr was 24. Thank you.

It may go down do to the trauma of surgery but then may recover. I am sure they will be prepared to protect your kidneys with what ever they need to. So sorry about the toe.

Hi. When I had surgery my EGFR actually improved as they gave me a lot of I’ve fluids. It stayed up for a year post surgery. Best wishes for a successful surgery.

I was told by Neurologist at stage 3 I should be okay two things of concern if my blood pressure goes very low it would directly put me into dialysis. Also to watch out what type of pain medication I would be given as that affects kidney function, Hope all goes well.

Hi Yankees28. In 2008 while trying to determine what was causing my kidney issues, I had a partial nephrectomy. I was stage three, passing protein, with none of the normal issues that would cause one to pass protein. My egfr was fifty and remained within a few points of fifty during the entire time before, during and after the surgery. I remained in stage three until 2019. In 2022 I received an anonymous, live donor transplant. I’ll now thirteen days away from my second kidney-versary. Things are going great! Hang in there.

Surgery made mine go down! I would talk to your doctor or surgeon for more information. God bless!

Thank you for responding. Did it ever go back up or did it stay down. I did not have full anesthesia and it was a very short surgery. So I am hoping I stayed stable.
