Look for the letters eGFR. On my print outs it’s usually quite far down on the list of test results. But your creatinine level is really what most doctors care about. Most likely “sCr”.

It’s under biochemistry in Australia. Why do the doctors care more about creatinine? I thought that that could be elevated if you’re dehydrated?

I think it’s because eGFR is an estimation that is not exact, and the level of creatinine plays a large part in arriving at that estimated value. Creatinine can indicate how well your kidneys are functioning - and yes, hydration plays a role. Better hydration, better functioning. But this is based on my experience with two nephrologists and 2-3 GPs. Cystatin C is an even better measure.

Thanks so much for that info. I’ll make sure to get my Cystatin C checked. I haven’t actually been diagnosed yet but looking at my last four blood tests since Feb ‘22 looks like I’ll be stage 3A. My doctor is away until mid-Jan. will get bloods done again. Haven’t even had any urine tested yet for protein. Only ultrasound which showed cortical atrophy of both kidneys. Should I ask for any other tests? I’ll see a renal dietitian of course. Blood sugars okay. LDL a bit high but don’t need statins. Blood Pressure controlled

Cystatin C costs a bit more than a creatinine test, so they don’t do one as standard procedure. I got one though - since everything else was fine - and it confirmed CKD3a for me. The urine test is important. I’ve been told to drink about 2 l (or make sure I get about that much per day - soups etc also count). My last tests on 10Dec were a real improvement- so now I guess I’ll be tested again in March and will try to maintain my diet, exercise AND hydration routine.

Yes, easy enough to see on mine. My GP watches creatinine, think I’m right in saying if creatinine goes up markedly , eGFR usually goes down and thats my worry. Keep well folks.
